Konrad Warzecha, a full-time traveller and house-sitting expert who has visited more of Europe than most, told Travel Editor Alice Murphy about his favourite city. Having explored 43 European capitals, he ranks Skopje, the capital of North Macedonia, as his number one.
Why Skopje Stands Out
Warzecha notes that Skopje remains under the radar, not overrun with tourists. He describes the city centre, with Macedonia Square, Stone Bridge, and the Old Bazaar, as genuinely impressive, featuring white marble, bizarre sculptures, and elegant bridges. Skopje is extremely walkable, and public transport is cheap—around £8 to £10 for a weekly pass, including the cable car to the Millennium Cross. It also felt like one of the safest cities he has visited.
An Emerging Destination
North Macedonia welcomed just 1.4 million international visitors last year, compared to Belgium's 10 million, highlighting its undiscovered status. Warzecha shares an anecdote: Skopje recently got its first digital speed cameras, and their tour guide proudly claimed to be the only one not fined yet. He adds that you sometimes share highways with cows, which adds to the adventure.
Exploring Beyond the City
The surrounding countryside is spectacular. Within 20 minutes, you can reach Matka Canyon, one of the most stunning national parks Warzecha has seen. Lake Ohrid, with its unique ecosystem of about 200 native species, is a three-hour drive. North Macedonia's borders allow easy access to Kosovo, Serbia, Greece, or Albania in a couple of hours.
Practical Tips for Visitors
Warzecha recommends starting in the main square and booking a tour with providers like Get Your Guide, opting for the cheapest package (around £15 per person) and paying small entry fees separately. He suggests walking five minutes from the centre to find local spots without tourist crowds. Everyone he met greeted him with a smile.
Food and Accommodation
Traditional Macedonian fare is hearty and cheap. Must-try dishes include ajvar (roasted red pepper relish), tavce gravce (baked beans), and burek for breakfast. Local restaurant recommendations include Skopski Merak, Spajz, and Old House. For accommodation, Warzecha stayed in an Airbnb for about £85 total for four nights, a 15-minute walk from the centre. The Marriott Skopje offers rooms from £95.
