Trump's 'Unbelievable' 250th Anniversary State Fair Disappoints Amid Extreme Heat
Trump's 250th Anniversary Fair Disappoints in Heat

The Great American State Fair, promoted by President Donald Trump as the 'most unforgettable birthday party any country has ever seen,' has been met with disappointment and extreme heat, with temperatures exceeding 100°F (37.8°C) in Washington DC. The event, centerpiece of the US 250th anniversary celebrations, features tented pavilions and marquees representing states and territories on the National Mall.

Thin Crowds and Heat Illnesses

Attendance was sparse in the early days of the fair, which opened with Trump's proclamation that it would be 'unbelievable.' By Friday, crowds increased, but the blistering sun drove many away. According to NBC Washington, more than a dozen people were treated for heat illness and injury, with 11 taken to the hospital. Dave Forster, 63, a self-described 'friggin patriot' from Washington state, called the offerings 'a total disappointment,' criticizing many state pavilions as lacking.

Inside the Arkansas pavilion, a host offered cooling towels and fans as prizes to entice visitors. A mother waiting in line with her young family promised to find air conditioning after clearing security.

State Pavilion Offerings and Controversies

State pavilions varied widely in quality. Nebraska featured a two-dimensional cutout of a grand champion market goat, Illinois displayed toy Caterpillar machines in a corn-filled sandpit, and Nevada offered two giant dice. Some states, like Oregon, declined to participate, citing the event's 'partisan affair.' A woman entering the California pavilion found only a photo of the Golden Gate Bridge and a TV showing the state on Google Earth.

The fair faced negative headlines earlier in the week: Confederate flag images were removed from North Carolina's booth, a section of the main stage fell during rehearsals narrowly missing dancers, and food prices were high, with turkey legs at $23 and 'red, white and blue' ice for $7.

Political Undertones and Visitor Reactions

Despite Trump's promotion, the event's political nature divided attendees. Forster noted some stayed away because they saw it as partisan. Messages scrawled on Washington DC's space walls captured the polarization: 'America is back!!' and 'Trump 2028' alongside 'FREE DC!' and 'No kings.' John, a visitor from Tampa, Florida, who declined to give his last name, said he avoided politics and aimed to 'find common ground.' He was not interested in Trump's Saturday night address, calling it 'the very bottom of my list.'

A model of the proposed 'Arc de Trump' arch stood near a ferris wheel, providing shade for visitors. However, as temperatures rose, the event was postponed, with announcements instructing guests to exit and promising reopening after 5pm.

Military Flyovers and Attendance Boost

Friday's theme, 'Wings of Freedom,' included military flyovers. James Bytner, from Virginia, said he loved the event, describing it as 'freedom.' He had attended the 204th anniversary and found this year 'so far, so good.' Despite earlier thin crowds, the holiday weekend boosted attendance.

The fair, organized to mark the US semiquincentennial, highlighted the nation's divisions and the challenge of celebrating unity amid political strife and extreme weather.
