Spielberg's Disclosure Day Strong; Michael Breaks Record

Steven Spielberg's UFO thriller Disclosure Day has opened strongly at the box office, grossing nearly $100 million globally in its opening weekend. The film is on track to become the director's best-performing original title in the US.

Disclosure Day Box Office Performance

The film, which stars Emily Blunt as a weather forecaster who can channel alien discourse and Josh O'Connor as a whistleblower, took $44 million domestically over the three-day weekend. With an additional $7.6 million from the UK and Ireland, the global total stands at approximately $92.9 million. The film opened in 77 territories.

Disclosure Day cost $115 million to produce and an estimated $80 million to market. Pundits estimate it needs around $300 million to break even, as cinema owners take a substantial cut of ticket prices. Spielberg's most recent film to achieve this goal was 2018's Ready Player One, which grossed $583.5 million globally.

Nearly half of Ready Player One's total came from China, but Disclosure Day has been less successful there, earning $2.95 million and debuting at No. 3. More than a quarter of its Chinese gross came from Imax screenings.

Audience Demographics

In the US, almost half of the grosses came from premium large format screenings. About 60% of ticket buyers were 35 or older, and 57% were male.

Other Box Office Highlights

Obsession, Curry Barker's sleeper hit, was No. 2 in the US, with four consecutive weekend totals bigger than its opening. It has taken $286 million worldwide, marking a best-ever result for distributor Focus Features.

Backrooms, another viral horror from a young YouTuber, continues to perform strongly with $262 million worldwide. It overtook Marty Supreme to become A24's highest-grossing film after less than two weeks.

Michael Jackson Biopic Breaks Records

Michael, the first part of Antoine Fuqua's biopic of Michael Jackson, has also broken records. Its global total topped $932 million, overtaking Bohemian Rhapsody's $911 million to become the highest-grossing music biopic ever. The film, produced by Graham King, defied considerable criticism. Next target is the highest-grossing biopic ever, held by Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer ($975 million in 2023).
