Broadway legend Patti LuPone has expressed fury after a cruise ship she is scheduled to perform on was denied entry to Turkey because it carries a large number of gay passengers. The 77-year-old actress shared the news on Instagram, stating that authorities refused the Atlantis Events cruise permission to dock at ports in Istanbul and Kuşadası.
LuPone's Statement
'I am shocked,' LuPone wrote. 'The Atlantis cruise I am performing on next week has been banned from entering Turkey. A ship — a magnificent ship full of gay men. And me. Denied entry to Turkey simply because of who is on board.' She added, 'I am furious, but I am sailing.' LuPone promised she will still perform for passengers as the cruise heads to alternative destinations. 'I am ready to perform for all the wonderful men on this Atlantis cruise, who deserve so much better than this,' she said.
Turkish Authorities' Reasoning
According to Turkish authorities, the decision was made based on the country's 'moral standards' and 'family values.' The cruise will now visit Cairo and Crete instead of Turkish ports. Rich Campbell, president and CEO of Atlantis Events, said this is the first time in the company's history that a country has explicitly refused entry because of who was onboard. 'It's pretty stunning, to be honest,' he told CNN. 'The reasoning behind it is that it's a gay group.' Campbell stressed that Atlantis is not a political organisation. 'We are not there for anything except to spend money, have a good time, take tours and be incredibly respectful to every culture we visit,' he said.
Impact and Reactions
The incident has drawn widespread attention, with many comparing it to a plotline from a television drama. LuPone's dramatic response has resonated with fans, who see her as a staunch ally of the LGBTQ+ community. The cruise, originally planned to include stops in Turkey, will now offer passengers performances by LuPone and other entertainers as it sails to alternative Mediterranean destinations.
