Bunches, a UK-based online florist, has been named Family Business of the Year at the prestigious UK Business Awards. The company, which delivers over 10 million flower stems annually, was recognized for its commitment to sustainability and family values.
Family-Run Business Thrives
Founded in 2003 by siblings James and Sarah Armitage, Bunches started as a small venture in their parents' garage. Today, it employs over 200 people and operates from a 50,000-square-foot facility in Kent. The Armitage family remains actively involved in daily operations, with James serving as CEO and Sarah as Creative Director.
According to James Armitage, “Winning this award is a testament to our team’s dedication. We’ve always believed that a family business can compete with larger corporations by focusing on quality and customer service.”
Sustainability at Core
Bunches sources flowers from sustainable farms, with 80% of its stems coming from the UK and the Netherlands. The company uses recyclable packaging and offsets carbon emissions through tree-planting initiatives. In 2022, Bunches planted 10,000 trees in partnership with the Woodland Trust.
Sarah Armitage highlighted, “We want to ensure that every bouquet brings joy without harming the planet. Our customers appreciate that we prioritize eco-friendly practices.”
Impact on Local Economy
The award has boosted Bunches’ profile, leading to a 15% increase in sales since the announcement. The company plans to expand its workforce by 30 new hires in the next year, focusing on local talent. Bunches also supports local charities, donating 1% of profits to community projects.
The judges praised Bunches for its “exceptional growth, strong family ethos, and innovative approach to sustainable floristry.” The award ceremony took place in London, celebrating businesses that demonstrate excellence in family ownership.
