Netflix is launching a new competition series based on the classic board game Monopoly, with a $2 million prize for the last player standing. The show will feature 12 contestants who will compete in a life-size Monopoly Town Square, making deals, earning cash, and buying houses on a giant game board.
Format and production details
According to Tudum by Netflix, players will be eliminated one by one when they go bankrupt, while others build their empire until one winner takes the entire prize. The series is produced in partnership with Hasbro Entertainment and Studio Lambert, the production company behind other Netflix hits like Squid Game: The Challenge and The Circle.
Fan reactions and related projects
Fans have reacted online with humor and nostalgia. Karlito joked on X: 'Finally a chance to use my “Go directly to jail” card for real life rent payments.' Sofia expressed hope that the 'Bank Error in Your Favour' card would be worth $2 million. Meanwhile, Dev urged Netflix to renew The Society instead of creating new shows.
The Monopoly series joins a roster of unscripted adaptations from Netflix, including Wonka's The Golden Ticket, which debuts September 23. Hasbro Entertainment is also producing a Monopoly film with Lionsgate and Margot Robbie's Lucky Chap production company, aiming to replicate the success of Barbie with Mattel.
History of Monopoly
The game now known as Monopoly was originally created by left-wing feminist Lizzie Magie, who patented the board game in 1903. For many years, Charles Darrow—who was introduced to the game later—was credited as the inventor. Monopoly debuted in 1935 and has sold over 275 million copies worldwide.
Netflix's Monopoly series is scheduled to premiere in autumn 2027.
