Magic Weekend saves Super League roadshow with record 80,000 fans at Everton
Magic Weekend draws record 80,000 fans to Everton

Super League's Magic Weekend returns for its 20th edition at Everton's Hill Dickinson Stadium, drawing a record 80,000 fans—10,000 more than the previous best in Newcastle a decade ago. The event, a round of fixtures over 48 hours, was nearly scrapped but revived by local derbies and a popular venue.

Record Attendance and High-Profile Guests

Over 80,000 supporters will head to Merseyside, including potential future prime minister Andy Burnham, who will watch Leigh Leopards vs Warrington Wolves on Saturday. The Guardian understands the event will remain at Everton in 2027 due to high demand.

Derbies Breathe New Life

Blockbuster derbies like Hull FC vs Hull KR, Leeds vs Bradford, and Wigan vs St Helens close the weekend. Rhodri Jones, managing director of RL Commercial, said: “We knew Everton would be a success and it’s proof the concept does work. There is now competition in the market because the usual destinations are asking what we’re doing next year.”

Broadcast Deal and Financial Pressures

Super League and Sky Sports are finalizing a new broadcast deal, with an announcement expected later this month. The current deal is worth £20m per year, half of a decade ago and dwarfed by the NRL's $5bn deal. Jones said: “The game needs more money hence the recapitalisation project [with the NRL]. We’re hopeful we’ll get a conclusion in the next couple of weeks.”

Future of Super League

The deal's value will shape the future of Super League and rugby league in the northern hemisphere. Clubs are losing money, raising questions about sustaining 14 clubs. Talks over NRL investment have stalled but may accelerate. Jones revealed: “We’ve presented them with our northern hemisphere strategy documents this week. I’m confident we’re still moving in the right direction.”

Magic Weekend showcases Super League at a pivotal time, with the sport's value and future hanging in the balance.
