Jennifer Lopez’s oversized straw hat at the Wimbledon men’s singles final on Sunday has divided fans, with many calling it ‘inappropriate’ and ‘rude’ for violating the tournament’s strict dress code. The American singer and actress, 56, attended the prestigious event at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club (AELTC) in a beige wrap dress and stiletto sandals, but her natural-coloured hat with an extra-wide brim drew the most attention.
Wimbledon’s strict dress code
Wimbledon’s rules, outlined in point 5.1.10 of the prohibited items list, ban ‘oversized hats or other garments which could, in the reasonable opinion of the AELTC, restrict or interrupt the view or enjoyment of other Attendees.’ While Lopez adhered to the garden party vibe, her hat sparked backlash online, with some joking that it looked ‘made from an Amazon box.’ One user wrote: ‘Solidarity with the guy who spent £3,000 to see Jennifer Lopez’s hat.’ Another added: ‘Imagine how p***** off you could be at Wimbledon, sitting close to Jennifer Lopez with a fan, and a hat that could cast a shadow over the dome of St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome.’
Lopez eventually removed the hat, revealing her honey blonde locks in a sleek blow dry, likely to the relief of those seated behind her. The incident comes as Wimbledon attracts a host of A-listers, including Oscar winners and music royalty, all adhering to the smart-casual dress code.
