'Hardest Wordle of all time' ruins winning streaks with 'PSHAW'
'Hardest Wordle of all time' ruins winning streaks

Wordle players were left frustrated on July 15, 2026, as the daily puzzle featured the word 'PSHAW,' widely considered the hardest Wordle of all time. The answer, which Merriam-Webster defines as an interjection expressing irritation or disbelief, began with the rare consonant cluster 'PSH,' a combination found in only a handful of English words.

Unprecedented difficulty

The New York Times, which acquired Wordle in early 2022, revealed that its game testers—paid to solve each puzzle in advance—took an average of six guesses to get 'PSHAW.' Many players took to Reddit to share their struggles. 'I never would have come up with this, I never use this word, and I never hear it used. I know it exists, but I didn’t know it would be a valid word here,' one user commented. Another added: 'I am familiar with this word, but it nonetheless took 6 guesses for me to get there.' A third remarked: 'If that’s a word then, Pffff should be a word too…the sound an air hose makes when it springs a leak!'

Wordle's enduring popularity

Wordle, created by Josh Wardle in June 2021 as a private game for his partner, became a cultural phenomenon after its public release in October 2021. By 2025, it boasted over 12 million active daily users and counts celebrities like Ben Affleck and Matt Damon among its fans. A TV show based on the game is reportedly in development.

Parseword: Wardle's new challenge

Wardle has since launched Parseword, a game designed to simplify cryptic crosswords. According to the game's website, 'Cryptics are beautiful and rich puzzles but are notoriously hard to learn. We wanted to make a game that captures the joy of solving cryptics while making them more accessible to everyone.' In an interview with the New Yorker, Wardle said he hopes to 'reduce the problem space for new solvers' with Parseword, adding: 'Releasing Parseword is happening more on my own terms, instead of happening to me.'
