GTA 6 Digital-Only Confirmed: Price and Edition Details
Rockstar Games has officially confirmed that Grand Theft Auto 6 will be a digital-only release, with no physical copy available. The announcement has sparked mixed reactions among fans, particularly regarding pricing and content exclusivity. The Ultimate Edition, priced at £89.99, includes certain businesses and an apartment not available in the standard version, forcing players to pay extra for these features.
Reader Gaz Be Rotten expressed frustration: "That's bad news for GTA fans and quite frustrating and disappointing. Regardless, GTA 6 should be one hell of a game." However, GameCentral noted that earlier in the week, fans braced for a standard edition price of £100, but not even the Ultimate Edition reaches that threshold.
Pre-Order Reactions and Online Concerns
Reader David pre-ordered the Ultimate Edition, stating: "I went for the £89.99 one because how often does GTA come out? About every 13 years." He expressed concern that the game might be single-player only, hoping online is included without extra charge. "If online is included I'll be over the moon. At the moment, I'm just excited. Well, I was till I saw it is 147 days till download day."
Another reader, Alex, raised technical concerns: "Due to the ridiculously high demand everything is going to crash or slow down to a crawl. This is going to be a huge (200GB+ ?) download which millions of people are going to simultaneously be trying to complete." He pessimistically expects not to play until the new year. GameCentral agreed that 200GB is likely a conservative estimate.
Physical Media Advocates Disappointed
Michael Veal (@msv858) criticized the lack of a physical edition: "I bought the disc drive version of the PlayStation 5 specifically to avoid massive downloads. Having a physical edition that's just an empty box with a code inside it is fundamentally rubbish." He added that offering a box with a code is an insult to physical media fans.
Reader Simon echoed this: "The fact it is download-only means I won't bother now. My internet isn't overly fast, so the thought of downloading a 100+ GB game means I'll never bother. I like buying physical so that I actually own the things I buy." He warned that GTA 6's success will accelerate the transition to digital-only, predicting the PlayStation 6 may lack a disc drive.
Speculation on Gameplay and Online Future
One reader speculated that GTA 6's single-player mode may follow Red Dead Redemption 2's structure: "A very linear game, disguised as open world. The mention of 'chapter timed content' confirms chapter sequences. I loved Red Dead Redemption 1, but felt 2 was a slog." They also predicted that GTA Online might remain separate, with Vice City becoming a downloadable expansion, possibly free for GTA 6 owners.
GameCentral noted that no substantial leaks about gameplay or story have emerged.
