A British couple have revealed how they saved £20,000 on hotel bills while traveling by staying for free in people's homes as pet sitters. Mike Lucas, 33, and Emily Gillingham, 32, spent four years exploring New Zealand and Australia, hardly spending a penny on accommodation.
They used the website Trusted House Sitters, which connects homeowners with travelers willing to look after their pets and properties. The couple, originally from Edinburgh and Southwell, stayed in 13 homes during their first 18-month trip and continue to use the service for weekend getaways.
A Game-Changing Strategy
Mike said: "It was a game-changer for us because when we first arrived in New Zealand, we didn't know how long we were going to stay. It allowed us to maximize our budget and made our travels more fruitful, fun, and sustainable." The couple have cared for dogs, cats, and chickens, and Mike noted that the arrangement made the country feel more accessible and slowed the pace of travel.
They began house sitting in November 2022 after quitting their jobs as a client accountant and research director. Emily's parents, who use Trusted House Sitters for their dog Monty, introduced them to the service.
Strict Budget and First Success
Mike explained: "We had a strict budget and were looking at ways to save money so we could make it last as long as possible." Their first sit was a three-week stay in a two-bedroom house in Waikanae, north of Wellington, where they looked after a Boxer-cross dog. The process involved sending a cover letter, a video call, and an overnight handover.
From there, they traveled across New Zealand, including Auckland and Tauranga, and spent three months in Sumner, Christchurch. Over 328 days of free stays, they saved approximately £20,000 compared to renting one-bedroom Airbnbs.
Continuing the Practice
Now based in Melbourne, Australia, the couple still pet sit for weekend escapes and when visiting family in the UK. Mike emphasized the importance of respecting the homes: "It isn't the same as a hotel as it is someone's personal living space. They are putting a lot of trust in you." They always leave the house spotless and have only ever broken a glass.
When between sits, they stay in Airbnbs, hostels, or camp. Mike noted competition can be stiff, advising: "The earlier you apply, the higher the chance, but tailoring the application is equally important." He highly recommends the service, adding that they have made lasting friendships with homeowners.
The couple plans to explore Europe, America, and beyond using Trusted House Sitters.
