A newly released video has shed light on the arsenal of less-lethal weapons employed by Australian police forces, including tasers, beanbag rounds, and rubber bullets. The footage, obtained by Guardian Australia, provides a detailed look at the equipment used to subdue suspects without resorting to lethal force.
Weapons on Display
The video showcases several devices, such as the Taser X2 and Taser 7, which deliver electric shocks to temporarily incapacitate individuals. Additionally, it features the use of 12-gauge shotguns firing beanbag rounds and the Multi-Purpose Launcher for launching rubber bullets. These tools are intended to provide officers with options between verbal commands and deadly force.
Concerns Over Safety and Misuse
Critics argue that less-lethal weapons can still cause serious injury or death, particularly when used improperly or on vulnerable populations. According to Dr. Lisa Jackson, a criminologist at the University of Melbourne, “The term ‘less-lethal’ does not mean ‘non-lethal.’ There have been numerous cases where these weapons have resulted in fatalities or permanent harm.” She emphasized the need for strict guidelines and accountability.
Statistical Context
Data from the Australian Institute of Criminology indicates that between 2010 and 2020, at least 23 deaths were linked to police use of tasers. The video highlights the importance of understanding these risks, as police forces across the country continue to expand their less-lethal arsenals.
Police Justification
Police representatives defend the use of these weapons as essential for de-escalating dangerous situations. Senior Sergeant Mark Thompson stated, “Our primary goal is to protect both the public and our officers. Less-lethal options give us a critical middle ground.” However, human rights groups call for increased transparency and independent oversight of their deployment.
