Alfie's Antique Market, London's largest indoor antiques and vintage market, is celebrating its 50th anniversary. Located on Church Street in Marylebone, the 30,000 sq ft emporium spans four floors and houses over 100 vendors specializing in vintage fashion, fine silver, jewellery, and furniture. The market also features a rooftop lodge with a café, which has become a popular spot for shoppers and celebrities alike.
A 'rabbit warren' of curiosities
Founded in 1976 by entrepreneur Bennie Gray, who transformed a half-empty department store into London's antique capital, Alfie's was named after his father. Today, it attracts fashion-conscious Londoners and millions of visitors. The Times describes it as 'a kooky maze, with almost a hundred traders nestling between their wares' and notes its penchant for 'pearly kings, celebrities and taxidermy'.
TripAdvisor customers praise the shopping experience, though some note the vast size and multiple corridors can feel like a rabbit warren. One visitor said: 'I had the best afternoon exploring Alfies! It’s so much more than just an antiques market, you’ll find everything from vintage fashion to fine jewellery. A highlight for me was the clock restorer up on the second floor. Absolutely fascinating. Filled with beautifully intricate antique timepieces.'
Rooftop café and celebrity appeal
The rooftop café is a highlight, offering simple healthy food and drinks. Another visitor added: 'It is a big place and is a bit like a maze inside, but it's exciting to see all the rare pieces, vintage and antiques. The antique jewellery are beautiful and plentiful to choose from. Some furniture are just amazing, but extremely pricey. It is a lovely place to browse. And the rooftop cafe is an excellent place to take a rest with some simple healthy food and drinks.'
Alfie's Antique Market is open Tuesday to Saturday from 10am to 6pm. It remains a must-visit destination for vintage enthusiasts and those seeking unique pieces in London.
