London's Night Tube service has reached its 10th anniversary, with Transport for London (TfL) reporting that more than 67 million journeys have been made on the service since its launch in August 2016. The night-time service, which operates on Friday and Saturday nights, has reduced average night-time journey times by approximately 20 minutes, according to TfL data.
Service Launch and Expansion
The Night Tube was first announced in 2013 by then-Mayor Boris Johnson and officially launched on August 19, 2016, with the Central and Victoria lines. The Jubilee, Northern, and Piccadilly lines were added later that autumn. The Overground service, now known as the Windrush line, began its night service in December 2017 and expanded it in February 2018.
The service was suspended in March 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic and was not fully restored until July 2022. Despite this interruption, TfL states that the Night Tube now averages 81,000 journeys per night, with Saturdays typically busier than Fridays.
Official Reactions
Mayor of London Sadiq Khan commented on the milestone, saying: 'Travelling on the first-ever Night Tube is one of my favourite memories as Mayor. Through a decade of late nights and early starts, airport journeys and epic trips, morning shifts and nights out that go on for as long as you like, the night tube has become a defining feature of London as a world-leading 24/7 city.'
Khan added: 'Helping people travel safely and affordably at all hours provides a vital boost for our night-time economy, supporting local businesses across the capital and keeping London moving around the clock.'
Andy Lord, London's Transport Commissioner, described the service as 'much more than a transport service.' He stated: 'For millions of people, it is a vital connection to work, leisure and home, while supporting businesses, venues and London's world-leading night-time economy, which attracts visitors from around the world. Behind every Night Tube journey is someone getting to or from work, returning home safely, or making the most of everything the capital has to offer after dark.'
Future Prospects
Questions remain about the service's future expansion, including whether it will operate on additional days or include more lines. TfL has not announced any specific plans for expansion at this time.
