Winter Olympic Village Condom Supply Depleted in Record Three Days
Free condoms provided to competitors at the Winter Olympics have run out within a record-breaking three days, according to reports from the Italian newspaper La Stampa. The supply shortage has prompted organizers to assure athletes that more will arrive, though the timing remains uncertain.
Athletes Report Rapid Depletion of Supplies
An anonymous athlete informed La Stampa that the condom supplies were exhausted in just three days, stating, "They promised us more will arrive, but who knows when." The newspaper criticized the Olympic organizers for not being "particularly generous with the numbers," highlighting a stark contrast with previous games.
Comparison to Previous Olympic Games
During the Paris Games two years ago, athletes received approximately 300,000 condoms, equating to about two per day per competitor. In contrast, the Winter Olympics have provided fewer than 10,000 condoms for just under 3,000 athletes, compared to around 10,500 participants in Paris. This significant reduction has raised questions about supply planning and athlete welfare.
Official Response and Health Awareness Efforts
Attilio Fontana, the governor of the Lombardy region, addressed the issue on social media, emphasizing that the provision of free condoms should not be a source of embarrassment. He explained, "It began in Seoul 1988 to raise awareness among athletes and young people about sexually transmitted disease prevention—a topic that shouldn't cause embarrassment." Fontana also shared a viral Instagram post by Spanish figure skater Olivia Smart, who showcased condoms stamped with the yellow Lombardy Region logo, humorously noting, "I found them. They have everything you need."
Additional Amenities in the Olympic Village
Beyond health supplies, the Olympic village offers various activities to keep athletes engaged, including a large gym, table football, air hockey games, and even a piano. Free drinks machines stocked with Coca-Cola and Innocent smoothies are also available, ensuring a comfortable and entertaining environment for competitors.
The rapid depletion of condoms underscores the importance of health awareness in athletic events, while organizers work to replenish supplies and maintain established Olympic practices.
