Mikaela Shiffrin Breaks World Cup Record, Nears Historic Sixth Overall Crown
American skiing superstar Mikaela Shiffrin achieved a remarkable milestone on Tuesday, setting a new women's World Cup record with nine victories in a single discipline this season. The Olympic champion dominated the slalom event in Lillehammer, winning by an impressive margin of 1.32 seconds ahead of Swiss competitor Wendy Holdener.
Title Showdown Heads to Season Finale
Shiffrin's latest triumph earned her 100 crucial points in the overall World Cup standings, but German rival Emma Aicher's third-place finish kept the championship battle alive. With just 85 points separating the two athletes, the prestigious overall title will be decided in Wednesday's season-ending giant slalom race.
The American star needs only a top-15 finish to secure what would be her record-tying sixth overall championship, matching Austrian legend Annemarie Moser-Pröll's women's World Cup record. Aicher faces a much steeper challenge, needing to win the giant slalom - a discipline in which she has never claimed a World Cup victory.
Historic Career Achievements
Tuesday's victory marked Shiffrin's 110th career World Cup win, extending her already substantial lead as the most successful skier in circuit history. The achievement far surpasses Ingmar Stenmark's previous record of 86 wins from the 1970s and 1980s.
"This season has been so exciting, quite like a whirlwind," Shiffrin reflected after her record-setting performance. "I'm grateful for it."
Friendly Rivalry Intensifies
The relationship between the two title contenders adds an interesting dimension to the championship battle. "It's weird to say battle with somebody who I consider a friend," Shiffrin acknowledged regarding Aicher. "These last races have been super exciting for me to be part of. I'm so excited to watch what she does in the future but for now we have one more race to decide this one."
Holdener's second-place finish on Tuesday proved crucial to the championship equation, as her narrow 0.04-second advantage over Aicher prevented the German from earning an additional 20 points that could have significantly tightened the standings.
Record-Breaking Season
Shiffrin's nine slalom victories this season represent the most wins in a single discipline by any woman in World Cup history, breaking a record that had stood for sixty years. The American had already secured her record ninth career slalom season title earlier in the campaign.
Her potential sixth overall championship would cap an extraordinary career resurgence following personal challenges and competitive setbacks. Shiffrin previously won three consecutive overall titles from 2017-2019, then added back-to-back championships in 2022 and 2023.
As the season concludes under unusually warm conditions with temperatures reaching 7°C (44°F), the greatest slalom skier in history stands on the brink of adding another historic achievement to her already legendary career.
