Shaun Murphy's 'Best Ever Crucible Break' Seals Dramatic 10-9 Victory Over Fan Zhengyi

Shaun Murphy believes the break he executed in the deciding frame to defeat Fan Zhengyi 10-9 on Tuesday night stands as the finest he has ever produced at the Crucible Theatre. The Magician narrowly avoided an upset against Fan in the opening round of the World Snooker Championship, maintaining the tournament's trend where every seeded player has triumphed in the first round so far.

Since the championship commenced on Saturday, eleven seeds have advanced successfully, with no qualifier managing a victory yet, though five more will attempt to break that pattern over the next two days. The match evolved into a spectacular contest between Murphy and the former European Masters champion, with the score tied at 3-3 before each player alternated winning frames all the way to a tense 9-9 deadlock.

Ultimate Drama in the Deciding Frame

The climax unfolded with intense drama as the Englishman missed a couple of opportunities, allowing Fan to seize the initiative and build a lead. The 25-year-old Chinese player was ahead 53-17 when he attempted a challenging red to the middle pocket, narrowly missing it and leaving it accessible for Murphy.

Although that red was available, the remaining three balls were positioned awkwardly, and the black rested on the top cushion, making a clearance seem improbable. However, Murphy delivered an extraordinary break of 50, clearing up to the pink to secure his place in the last 16. While it may not have been his highest-scoring break at the Crucible, the 2005 champion insists it was his best ever performance under pressure.

Murphy's Pride in the Break

In an interview with TNT Sports, Murphy expressed his astonishment, stating, 'Of all the breaks I’ve ever made at the Crucible, that’s the best I’ve ever made. All the centuries and the fancy shots, I was literally out for the count there, the balls gave me one more chance to see what I’ve got. That’s the best break I’ve ever made at the Crucible.'

During his post-match press conference, he elaborated further, revealing, 'I was sat in my chair preparing my loser’s speech. When he played the red, from where I was sat I thought it was in and I was ready to shake his hand. But the game wasn’t done with me and it offered me that one last chance. I can’t believe that I’ve won the frame and the match from that position where the balls were. Of all the breaks I’ve ever made at the Crucible, and there have been some good ones, that’s the best one I’ve ever made. To stand up there, when it mattered the most, to clear up from there, I’m so proud.'

Fan Zhengyi's Performance and Future Prospects

This match marked Fan Zhengyi's third appearance at the Crucible, with his quest for a first victory at the venue continuing, but Murphy anticipates success in his future. Reflecting on his opponent, Murphy praised, 'I thought Fan Zhengyi played a great match. What a player. You could see he fancied it, he was hunting round the table. He had more than a foot in the last 16. I hope he goes away, watches the game and is proud of himself, proud of his performance, comes back next season and keeps going, I think he’s going to have a great career.'

Murphy is now set to face Xiao Guodong in the last 16, with their match scheduled over three sessions on Thursday and Friday, promising more high-stakes snooker action.
