Canada Water Swimming Pool Reopens After Four-Month Safety Shutdown

The main swimming pool at Canada Water Leisure Centre in South London has officially reopened today, March 2, 2026, following a four-month closure due to unexpected maintenance problems. The eight-lane, 25-meter pool had only been operational for six weeks after its grand opening on September 1, 2025, before it was forced to shut down on October 13, 2025.

Safety Issues and Community Impact

Southwark Council identified unexpected problems within the building, including a fault with the system controlling temperature and air quality around the pool. While the learner pool with a moveable floor remained open, the main pool's closure caused significant disruption for local residents and swimming clubs.

Cllr Richard Leeming, Deputy Cabinet Member for Leisure and Sports at Southwark Council, expressed gratitude for the community's patience, stating, "We recognise the frustration residents will have felt during the temporary closure and we are grateful for the patience and understanding shown by our swimming community." He emphasized the importance of swimming as a life skill and its benefits for leisure, fitness, and rehabilitation across the borough.

Financial Losses for Swimming Club

Southwark Aquatics Swimming Club (SASC), a not-for-profit organization, revealed it was losing approximately £500 in revenue per month during the closure. The club, run by volunteers and parents training swimmers aged eight to 15, saw a 10% drop in membership as some members left or paid reduced fees due to limited programming.

Andy Moore, Chairman of SASC, highlighted the challenges faced, noting that members struggled to travel to alternative venues up to seven miles away. He said, "It has been a tough time for Southwark Council, our club, and all users of the pool. The council offered support as best it could during the outage, and for that we are grateful." With the reopening, Moore expressed hope that the club would bounce back and former members would return.

Background and Future Prospects

The Canada Water Leisure Centre replaces the former Seven Islands Leisure Centre, which closed after many years of service. The new facility is part of the multi-billion-pound Canada Water Masterplan, a partnership between British Land, AustralianSuper, and Southwark Council spanning 53 acres. In addition to the swimming pools, the centre features:

  • A four-court sports hall
  • A 'world-class' gym with a functional fitness area
  • Three group exercise studios

Cllr Leeming added, "We are incredibly excited to reopen the main pool and to welcome back our schools, swimming clubs, families and regular swimmers to enjoy everything this fantastic facility has to offer." The reopening marks a return to normalcy for the community, ending months of travel turmoil for swimmers and restoring full training programs.
