Championship Rugby Clubs: Smart Investment Opportunities, Says Bedford CEO

Bedford Blues Chief Executive Champions Championship Rugby Clubs as Prime Investment Targets

In a significant development for English rugby, the chief executive of Bedford Blues has declared that Championship rugby clubs represent smart and lucrative investment opportunities. This statement comes amid ongoing debates about the structure of professional rugby in England, particularly following the RFU Council's approval of plans to ringfence Premiership Rugby for several years, creating what many have termed a franchise league.

Criticism and Opportunity in the Championship

While the ringfencing of Premiership Rugby has faced criticism from various quarters, including within the second-tier Championship, there is a silver lining. Premiership Rugby may not remain a closed shop indefinitely, as expansion teams are expected to spend at least one season in the Championship before potentially earning promotion to the top flight.

Reports have surfaced about interest in establishing a new team in Birmingham, backed by Birmingham City owners Knighthead Capital. However, Gareth Alred, the chief operating officer at Bedford Blues, emphasizes that existing Championship clubs are the real gems for investors.

"If you're looking at an investment," Alred explains, "surely a club with existing infrastructure and existing fan base, an existing commercial model, looks to me a better opportunity than something from scratch."

He adds, "I think it's great to start in the Champ as long as the integrity of the league is still kept – it's really important that any new club or franchise, call it what you want, comes into our league. They have to win our league to even be considered to gain that Prem spot."

Why Bedford Blues Stands Out as an Investment Prospect

Bedford Blues currently hold third place in the Championship, trailing behind league leaders Ealing Trailfinders, who have amassed 102 points, and the revived Worcester Warriors, who have returned after a period in administration. With Premiership Rugby likely eyeing both clubs for future inclusion, what makes Bedford particularly attractive to investors?

The town boasts several advantages:

  • It is situated on the Thameslink line, providing excellent connectivity.
  • It has a strong rugby heritage, making it a true rugby town.
  • The club is set to be adjacent to a new Universal theme park, enhancing its appeal.

Alred notes, "In terms of wider investment, the answer is not now but not never. We think [the new rules] do allow that opportunity. We're one of the only sustainable clubs in the country. I'd say that makes you more ripe for investment than a lot of others."

He further elaborates, "It gives a long term opportunity but we're very focused on being the best we can be. We think Bedford's growing. We think we've had an exciting time for the town and the region. We're lucky to be the premier sporting institution in our town and we've got a lot of the values, the history, the heritage, that you would look for in terms of making a club great."

A Stable Future with Potential for Growth

Alred assures that decisions will be made with the best interests of fans and the club in mind, stating, "We very much will make decisions in the best interest of our fans and the club itself." While the future of Bedford Blues appears stable in the coming years, the evolving landscape of English rugby suggests that sustainable clubs like Bedford could leverage their position to attract fresh investment.

As the tectonic plates of English rugby continue to shift annually, it would not be surprising to see a club with such solid foundations actively seeking new investment to capitalize on emerging opportunities. This perspective from Bedford Blues highlights the untapped potential within the Championship, positioning it as a fertile ground for savvy investors looking to enter the rugby market.
