Elina Svitolina claimed her first Italian Open title in eight years with a commanding straight-sets victory over world number three Coco Gauff in Rome on Sunday. The Ukrainian, seeded 12th, triumphed 6-4, 6-3 in one hour and 28 minutes, displaying a masterclass in defensive tenacity and strategic shot selection.
Svitolina, who had not won a title since 2018, broke Gauff's serve three times and saved five of six break points she faced. The victory marked a remarkable resurgence for the 29-year-old, who returned to the tour last year after giving birth to her daughter in 2022.
Match Highlights
The first set was a tightly contested affair, with both players holding serve until the fifth game. Svitolina capitalized on a double fault from Gauff to secure the first break and took a 4-2 lead. Although Gauff broke back immediately, Svitolina broke again in the 10th game to seal the set.
In the second set, Svitolina continued to apply pressure, breaking Gauff's serve in the opening game. The American, who had won 10 consecutive matches on clay this season, struggled to find her rhythm against Svitolina's relentless defense and clever angles. Svitolina closed out the match with a forehand winner down the line.
Svitolina's Resilience
Speaking after the match, Svitolina said: "It's an incredible feeling to win here again. Eight years is a long time, and I've been through a lot. This title means so much to me and my team." She credited her improved fitness and mental strength for the victory.
Gauff, who was aiming for her second title of the year, acknowledged Svitolina's superior play. "Elina was just too good today. She didn't give me any rhythm, and I made too many unforced errors," said the 20-year-old American.
Road to the Title
En route to the final, Svitolina defeated several top players, including world number one Iga Swiatek in the quarterfinals and 2023 champion Elena Rybakina in the semifinals. Her victory in Rome is her first WTA 1000 title since 2018 and moves her back into the top 10 of the world rankings.
The win also solidifies Svitolina's status as a contender for the French Open, which begins later this month. With her confidence soaring, she will be a dangerous opponent for anyone in Paris.
