Norris Edges Closer to F1 Glory After Las Vegas Podium
McLaren's Lando Norris has moved a significant step closer to securing his first-ever Formula 1 World Championship after a second-place finish under the bright lights of the Las Vegas Grand Prix. Starting from pole position, the British driver delivered a strong performance to increase his lead at the top of the standings with just two races left in the season.
The Championship Picture Tightens
The race saw Red Bull's Max Verstappen execute a stunning overtake on Norris at the first corner, going on to dominate the event and claim victory. While this result keeps the reigning champion mathematically in the hunt, Norris's podium finish was crucial. He now holds a 42-point advantage over Verstappen and a 30-point lead over his McLaren teammate, Oscar Piastri.
Piastri, who finished fourth in Las Vegas, remains second in the championship, but Verstappen managed to close the gap to the Australian. The Dutch driver is now just 12 points behind Piastri, setting up a thrilling three-way battle for the top spots as the season reaches its climax.
Norris's Title Scenario for Qatar
All eyes now turn to the penultimate round of the season, the Qatar Grand Prix, where Norris has a clear opportunity to seal the deal. The 26-year-old from Bristol can win the world title with a race to spare if he leaves the Lusail International Circuit with a lead of 26 points or more over his rivals. A victory in Qatar would make him only the 11th World Champion from Great Britain.
Reflecting on his Las Vegas performance, Norris was self-critical about the start that ultimately cost him the win. "I made the mistake into Turn One. You've got to be punchy into Turn One, I was just a bit too punchy," he told reporters. "That cost me, so that's the way it is sometimes."
Despite the initial disappointment, Norris acknowledged the value of his result. "It's still a good result, second, and still good points so it's not like I'm too disappointed," he added, highlighting his 18th podium finish of an impressive season.
Looking Ahead to the Final Showdown
The F1 circus now heads to the Middle East for the final double-header. The schedule for the Qatar Grand Prix weekend (all times GMT) is:
- November 28: Practice 1 (13:30 – 14:30) & Sprint Qualifying (17:30 – 18:14)
- November 29: Sprint (14:00 – 15:00) & Qualifying (18:00 – 19:00)
- November 30: Race (16:00)
The season will then conclude one week later at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Norris has vowed to analyse his Las Vegas performance, stating, "I hate losing and we want to win as a team. Today was a pretty poor performance from our side so we'll review and see what we can do better next time." With the championship within his grasp, the entire UK sporting world will be watching to see if he can make history.
