Thomas Tuchel has defended his bold England World Cup squad decisions after making a string of controversial calls ahead of the summer tournament. Harry Maguire, Cole Palmer, and Phil Foden were among the most high-profile absentees, with Morgan Gibbs-White and Luke Shaw also missing out.
Tuchel's Philosophy: Team Over Talent
Speaking to the press on Friday morning, the German coach insisted his decisions were not based on pure talent, instead turning to players 'who are committed to the idea of team spirit and being unselfish.'
'It's not selecting the most talented players. Teams win championships and what we are trying to achieve can only be achieved with a team. We chose a very balanced squad,' Tuchel told reporters.
'I can assure every fan in the country we have 26 100 per cent committed players in camp with us who know their role, who are ready to buy into that role on and off the pitch and who are committed to the idea of team spirit and being unselfish.'
'We want to be a strong set piece team so we have specialists for that. We want to be a strong penalties team so we have specialists for that.'
Tuchel was grilled on those notable absentees and the somewhat surprising inclusions in his squad, with Ivan Toney, currently plying his trade in Saudi Arabia, and John Stones, who hasn't played a full game since August, among them.

'I don't fear leaving them at home. I'm very confident in the group we chose. Very difficult decisions, painful conversations, it's difficult to explain to the players. But we are trying to achieve as a team and we need a balanced squad. If we had picked these five names, another five would miss out. I like these kind of decisions.'
'Did they do anything wrong? No. Could they have been in the camp? Yes. But for some of them, it's just the amount of players in a certain position and we didn't want to play players out of position. We want clear roles and that comes with difficult decisions and hard choices.'

We can see he still collects the numbers, he has very special skills that could help us in scenarios when we are chasing a goal.'

John Stones Fitness Concerns
'He is ready. He is excited to come. I am a big believer in John, he is a world class player, an amazing character and a proven winner. He knows how to adapt to a winning culture, he knows how to adapt tactically on the field.'
'He is still on the highest level. We analysed a lot of training data because there is not a lot of proof the last half of the season but he has been available. We will reconnect with our principles and give him the chance to play in two friendly matches and I believe he will have a strong tournament for us.'
