Tottenham Hotspur have been urged to hijack Arsenal's pursuit of Victor Osimhen to strengthen their attacking options ahead of the new season. Former Spurs defender Toby Alderweireld has publicly backed a move for the Galatasaray striker, citing his proven goal-scoring record as exactly what the club needs.
Spurs' summer spending spree
Tottenham have already been active in the transfer market after narrowly avoiding relegation from the Premier League last season. The north London club have broken their transfer record twice to sign midfielders Mateus Fernandes from West Ham and Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United for a combined £185 million. Brighton defender Jan Paul van Hecke arrived for £52 million, while Marcos Senesi, Andy Robertson, and Martin Dubravka were brought in on free transfers to bolster the backline.
With just under three weeks remaining in the summer window, Tottenham have made adding depth in forward areas a priority. The club have been linked with moves for Manchester City winger Savinho, Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo, and Chelsea winger Pedro Neto. However, Alderweireld believes the focus should be on a centre forward.
Alderweireld's endorsement
Speaking to Hajper, Alderweireld said: 'Spurs could use a striker like Victor Osimhen – they need his goals because it's what they lacked last season as well.' He acknowledged concerns about Osimhen's age but argued for a mix of experience and youth. 'The only concern for clubs like Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United is maybe his age. He's not the youngest player anymore and it seems like everyone wants to find a 23-year-old superstar who can bang in goals for the next seven or eight years, and I understand that, but you also need a good mix.'
Alderweireld drew on his own experience at Ajax, where seasoned players like Dušan Tadic and Daley Blind mentored emerging talents such as Frenkie De Jong and Matthijs de Ligt. 'That's what you need,' he added.
Osimhen's record and Arsenal interest
Osimhen has scored 61 goals in 75 matches for Galatasaray, having made his move from Napoli permanent for £65 million last summer after an initial loan. Reports suggest Arsenal have shown interest, with Galatasaray approaching the Gunners to discuss deals for Gabriel Martinelli and Ethan Nwaneri. However, there are said to be no 'active negotiations' over a deal for Osimhen at present.
Osimhen addressed the speculation last week, saying: 'There are always rumours during the transfer windows. I'll focus on my job. I'm focused on my work. We'll see and think about what comes next then.'
As the transfer window enters its final weeks, Tottenham must decide whether to act on Alderweireld's advice and pursue a proven striker like Osimhen, or continue with their current options.
