Swiatek Overcomes Townsend in Emotional Three-Set Battle
Iga Swiatek, the defending Wimbledon champion, fought back tears after defeating American qualifier Taylor Townsend 6-1, 2-6, 6-3 in the first round on Centre Court. The world No. 3, known for her emotional vulnerability, struggled to explain her tears after the match.
“I think the whole process of opening the court and playing as a defending champion is for sure really emotional,” Swiatek said. “Last year probably the most amazing thing in my tennis career happened here. So I felt it today.”
Jekyll and Hyde Performance
Swiatek displayed two contrasting faces during the match. In the first set, she was dominant, saving five break points in her opening service game and winning six consecutive games to take the set in 31 minutes. She hit 11 winners against just four unforced errors.
But in the second set, her game unravelled. Double faults and unforced errors crept in, and she lost the first four games, eventually dropping the set with four winners and 16 unforced errors. Swiatek has lost seven of her last eight three-set matches, adding to the pressure.
“I also felt like at the beginning of the second set, Taylor pushed a little harder and she went to the net more successfully,” Swiatek said. “There are always two people playing. You know, if she wouldn’t push, maybe I wouldn’t make these mistakes.”
Turning Point in the Third Set
Swiatek credited a 21-minute opening game in the final set as the match’s turning point. She faced four break points but saved each one, serving three double faults in the process. She then broke Townsend at 3-2 and held on to win in just over two hours.
“I am happy I can get through a match like that because I got nervous in the second set but I was able to get back to my game,” Swiatek said. “With my game I feel pretty well. It’s just a matter of consistency.”
Challenging Path Ahead
No woman has defended the Wimbledon singles title since Serena Williams in 2016. Swiatek faces a tough draw, starting with former finalist Karolina Pliskova in the second round. Potential opponents include Serena Williams or Alexandra Eala in the third round, and Marta Kostyuk, Elina Svitolina, or Elena Rybakina later.
