Tottenham Supporters' Trust Voices Strong Opposition to New Head Coach
The Tottenham Hotspur Supporters' Trust has issued a forceful condemnation of the club's appointment of Roberto De Zerbi as head coach, expressing what they describe as "serious and far-reaching concerns" regarding his previous public support for Mason Greenwood. This criticism comes at a particularly sensitive time for the club, which is currently battling to avoid relegation from the Premier League.
Controversial Comments During Marseille Tenure
The controversy stems from De Zerbi's time as manager at Marseille, where he openly supported the signing of Greenwood despite the significant controversy surrounding the player's personal life. Greenwood, a former Manchester United forward, faced serious charges in 2022 including attempted rape, controlling and coercive behavior, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm. Although the Crown Prosecution Service discontinued the case in February 2023 after key witnesses withdrew and new evidence emerged, the allegations have continued to shadow Greenwood's career.
De Zerbi's comments about Greenwood have proven particularly inflammatory. The Italian manager described the player as a "good person" and expressed sadness about what happened to him, stating he knew "a very different person from the one portrayed in England." These remarks have drawn sharp criticism from multiple supporter groups associated with Tottenham Hotspur.
Supporter Groups Unite in Opposition
Several Tottenham supporter organizations have joined the Trust in condemning De Zerbi's appointment. Proud Lilywhites, the club's official LGBTQI+ supporters' association, and Women of the Lane have both voiced strong objections to the hiring. According to the Supporters' Trust statement, they had contacted the club administration prior to the appointment to express their opposition, but their concerns were apparently not heeded.
The Trust's statement emphasized that De Zerbi's comments were "unnecessary, ill-judged, and deeply offensive to a significant number of supporters" and would undoubtedly alarm victims of male violence. They argued that such statements, if left unaddressed, would create damaging divisions among supporters at precisely the moment when unity is most needed to support the team through their relegation battle.
Threat to Club Values and Unity
The timing of this controversy could not be worse for Tottenham, according to the Supporters' Trust. They noted that fans are currently rallying behind the "All Together, Always" initiative aimed at fostering unity, but De Zerbi's appointment places what they describe as "heavy strain" on that very unity. The Trust expressed concern that the club would create such division when the team needs fan support more than ever.
Perhaps most significantly, the Trust statement argued that any perceived sympathy toward alleged perpetrators of physical or sexual violence against women "fundamentally undermines trust in the custodianship of this club." They called for both the club and De Zerbi to publicly reaffirm their commitment to values of equality, respect, and integrity, and for those words to be backed by meaningful action including visible support for women's charities and organizations combating violence against women.
Background of the Greenwood Case
Mason Greenwood's career has followed a controversial path since the allegations first surfaced. After leaving Manchester United, he spent time on loan at Spanish club Getafe before making a permanent move to Marseille in 2024 under De Zerbi's management. The Crown Prosecution Service's decision to drop the case in 2023 came after key witnesses withdrew their involvement and what they described as "new material came to light." Greenwood had consistently denied all charges against him.
The Tottenham Hotspur Supporters' Trust acknowledged the challenging circumstances facing the club, including what they described as "the limited pool of managers with recent Premier League experience" and the urgency created by the relegation battle. However, they maintained that these factors did not justify an appointment that raises such significant concerns about values and club unity.
Tottenham Hotspur has been contacted for comment regarding the Supporters' Trust statement and the concerns raised about their new head coach's past statements regarding Mason Greenwood.
