Ole Gunnar Solskjær in Shock Manchester United Interim Manager Talks
Solskjær Could Make Shock Man Utd Return as Interim Boss

Manchester United are reportedly considering a sensational move to bring former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjær back to the club in an interim capacity, according to senior sources.

Wilcox Sees Solskjær as Prime Candidate

Jason Wilcox, the club's director of football, is understood to view the Norwegian as a leading option for the temporary role. It is believed that Solskjær, who remains a hugely popular figure at Old Trafford from his playing days, would be open to the prospect of a dramatic comeback.

The potential appointment is said to have the backing of key senior figures in the dressing room, including captain Bruno Fernandes and defender Harry Maguire. They are thought to welcome the stability and positive atmosphere his return could bring for the remainder of the season.

A Proven Track Record at Old Trafford

Solskjær is no stranger to the United hotseat, having previously managed the club for nearly three years. He initially took over as caretaker manager in December 2018 following the dismissal of José Mourinho.

His immediate impact and uplift in performances earned him the permanent role by March 2019. During his tenure, he guided United to consecutive top-three Premier League finishes in 2020 and 2021, and to the 2021 Europa League final, which they lost on penalties to Villarreal.

His spell ended in November 2021 after a poor run of form left the side seventh in the table. Since then, his only managerial role was at Turkish side Besiktas, from which he was sacked in August 2024.

Other Contenders for the Interim Role

Solskjær is not the only former United figure in the frame. Michael Carrick, the ex-midfielder who is also currently out of work, is another candidate under consideration.

Carrick has brief prior experience, having served as caretaker manager for three games between late November and early December 2021, winning two and drawing one. He is also thought to be receptive to the interim position.

The current interim head coach, Darren Fletcher, who will take charge for the first time against Burnley this Wednesday, remains another option to see out the campaign.

United's new chief executive, Omar Berrada, alongside Wilcox, is reportedly keen on an appointment that can deliver an immediate positive impact on results and restore a sense of unity and optimism at the club.
