Mexico is at the center of another FIFA complaint ahead of their World Cup game against England, following a series of incidents involving Ecuador. The co-hosts are scheduled to play England at Azteca Stadium on Sunday at 6pm local time (1am BST Monday).
FIFA considers kick-off time change
On Friday night, FIFA considered moving the kick-off to six hours earlier due to weather and safety concerns. Thunderstorms and heavy rain are forecast, which could cause significant delays. However, strong opposition from both England and Mexico over lack of preparation time and impact on travelling supporters led FIFA to keep the original time.
Previous complaint from Ecuador
Ecuador had already filed a formal complaint earlier this week after Mexico fans targeted their team hotel the night before their last-32 match. Fans used car horns, fireworks, motorcycles, and loudspeakers to disturb players. The Ecuadorian Football Federation (FEF) stated: 'Such conduct stands in stark contrast to the principles of fair play, equity, and unity that a World Cup should embody. The FEF respectfully calls upon the competent authorities to pay greater attention to these events and to adopt the necessary measures to safeguard the safety of our players, coaching staff, and fans.'
Second complaint and demand for investigation
Ecuador has now submitted a second complaint to FIFA, demanding a full investigation into all incidents that may have compromised safety. Among the reported issues: a delay of over three hours in their 40-mile journey from Felipe Angeles International Airport to their team hotel due to lack of police escort through heavy traffic. After the match, Ecuadorian supporters and journalists were attacked by Mexico fans who threw liquids and objects. The FEF stated: 'Regarding what happened against Mexico, the FEF filed a formal complaint with FIFA, requesting a thorough investigation of the events that occurred before and during the match, including all those that may have compromised the safety of our fans and players.'
Fan deaths during celebrations
Earlier this week, after Mexico's 2-0 win over Ecuador in the last-32, four people died as thousands of fans crowded Mexico City streets during celebrations.
England security increased
England received a police escort to their hotel upon arriving in Mexico City on Friday. Security has been heightened following Ecuador's complaints, with England's hotel immediately surrounded by police officers in riot gear.
