Russell Wins F1 Sprint, Antonelli Furious After Clash

George Russell won the sprint race at the Canadian Grand Prix, but his championship battle with Kimi Antonelli reached an angry flashpoint. The Mercedes pair clashed for the lead on track, leaving the teenage Italian demanding a penalty for the British driver.

Team Principal Intervenes

Team principal Toto Wolff intervened, telling Antonelli to "stop the radio moaning" after the incident. The clash cost Mercedes a likely one-two finish, as Antonelli fell to third behind McLaren's Lando Norris.

On-Track Incident

Russell and Antonelli were vying for the lead when the Italian attempted to pass on lap six at turn one. The cars brushed, and Antonelli was forced off track. The 19-year-old immediately called for a penalty, saying, "That should be a penalty, I was alongside the mirror." Antonelli felt he had the position, but Russell held his line.

Worse followed for Antonelli as he pushed too hard at the chicane, went off on the grass, and lost second place to Norris. He admitted the error but remained angry, telling his race engineer, "I don't care he pushed me off!"

Wolff's Concerns

Wolff faced a war between his drivers reminiscent of the Hamilton-Rosberg rivalry in 2014. He insisted they would discuss the matter privately. Antonelli said, "I need to review it, because I was quite well alongside and I got pushed off." Russell simply called it "a good battle."

Championship Implications

Russell closed the gap to championship-leading Antonelli to 18 points. The win was a strong start to the weekend for Russell, who won the season opener in Australia and the first sprint in China, while Antonelli had won the previous three races.

Oscar Piastri finished fourth for McLaren, Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton were fifth and sixth for Ferrari, Max Verstappen seventh for Red Bull, and Arvid Lindblad eighth for Racing Bulls.
