George Russell holds off Max Verstappen to win Austrian Grand Prix
Russell beats Verstappen in Austrian GP thriller

George Russell won the Austrian Grand Prix after a tense and gripping battle with a resurgent Red Bull driven by Max Verstappen. Russell held his nerve to secure victory even as Verstappen charged in the final laps at the Red Bull Ring, earning a win the British driver sorely wanted.

Top Three Close at the Flag

Mercedes teammate Kimi Antonelli finished third, having harried Verstappen to the flag, with the top three separated by just two seconds at the end. Ferrari’s expected challenge failed to materialise, as their car struggled for grip and pace in Austria. Lewis Hamilton finished fifth and Charles Leclerc eighth. Oscar Piastri was fourth for McLaren, with teammate Lando Norris in seventh, while Isack Hadjar took sixth for Red Bull.

According to race results, Russell’s win—his first since the opening round in Melbourne—moves him back into second place in the championship, closing the gap to Antonelli to 40 points. Hamilton is now third, 46 points back.

Verstappen's Strong Performance

Russell’s victory was hard fought but deserved, as he could not afford a single mistake with Verstappen showing immense pace to follow him home from fifth after a big crash in qualifying. Speculation about the four-time champion’s future swirled all weekend, with rumours of a move to McLaren. Team principal Zak Brown noted that while he was happy with his lineup, he would sign Verstappen if something happened to one of his current drivers.

Verstappen has always been clear he wants performance above all. Red Bull knows that if they deliver, he will stay. The upgrades brought to Austria have certainly delivered at this circuit. Verstappen was extremely rapid at the Red Bull Ring, achieving his best finish this season and genuinely contending for the win.

Russell Reasserts Title Challenge

For Russell, this victory was badly needed. With Antonelli taking wins in five of the previous seven meetings, Russell needed to reassert himself in the title fight and did so with style. This season, he started as favourite but struggled with poor fortune and pressure from his young teammate. He remains confident he can compete for the title, but an impressive victory was a reminder of his calm control under pressure.

Russell held his lead from the start while the two Ferraris vied with each other. Hamilton took second place with a bold move around the outside of turn four. Antonelli was frenetic but too eager, repeatedly going off track, and was passed by Verstappen on lap two, who then passed Leclerc for third.

Verstappen quickly showed his speed, closing on Hamilton and making a pass on turn three only for Hamilton to immediately reclaim the place as they went wheel to wheel through turns six and seven. Verstappen felt he was forced wide, describing it as a “clear penalty,” but the stewards deemed it fair racing.

Ferrari's Struggles and Verstappen's Charge

Ferrari did not have the pace or grip to stay in the fight, even trying a three-stop strategy for Hamilton that did not work. After the first stops, Verstappen once more came at Hamilton on lap 22, squeezing past at turn three and then taking the place through turn six with a bold move on fresher tyres.

Verstappen looked strong, cutting Russell’s lead to four seconds by lap 34 and a further second two laps later. He was catching Russell at a rapid rate as Russell struggled for pace. By lap 40, Verstappen was within 1.5 seconds.

After Russell took his final stop on lap 44 for fresher tyres, Verstappen stayed out, losing time on worn rubber until he pitted on lap 49. He emerged 11 seconds behind Russell with 21 laps to go and reduced the gap to six seconds with 12 remaining. It was a tense finale as Verstappen moved closer, three seconds off with three to go. However, Russell maintained iron composure to hold his line and the place, even as Antonelli closed on Verstappen to take their battle to the flag.
