Portugal's Cristiano Ronaldo, now 41, is barely able to move and lacks the explosive power that once made him great, according to a critical analysis of his role in the upcoming World Cup. While veterans like Lionel Messi and Luka Modric continue to feature prominently, an obsession with celebrity may undermine Portugal's chances.
A Record Number of Veterans
The 2026 World Cup in Canada, the US, and Mexico could see more players over 40 than in all previous 22 tournaments combined. Besides Ronaldo and Messi, Luka Modric, Edin Dzeko, and goalkeepers Manuel Neuer, Craig Gordon, Guillermo Ochoa, and Vozinha are all 40 or older. Yuto Nagatomo, at 39, joins Messi as the only other player of that age. Historically, only seven players had reached 40 at a World Cup, with Essam El Hadary being the oldest at 45 years and 161 days in 2018.
Goalkeepers Lead the Way
Goalkeepers dominate the list of older players, such as Faryd Mondragon, who entered in 2014 solely to become the oldest player. Others like Pat Jennings and Dino Zoff earned their spots through merit, with Zoff captaining Italy to victory in 1982. Outfield exceptions include Roger Milla, who scored at 42 in 1994.
Reasons for Longevity
The increase in older players is partly due to tournament expansion—Vozinha's Cape Verde might not have qualified for a 32-team event. Improved sports science, nutrition, and recovery methods also play a role, with players like James Milner and Robert Lewandowski extending their careers.
Messi vs. Ronaldo
Messi, at 39, can still produce decisive passes, making his inclusion worthwhile despite diminished pace. However, Ronaldo's immobility is a liability. At the 2022 World Cup, Portugal played better without him, scoring six goals against Switzerland when he was benched. Yet fan adulation persists, reflecting modern football's focus on personality over performance.
Ronaldo's presence risks stifling a talented generation of Portuguese creators. While he remains fit for his age, his lack of movement makes him an albatross, and any mobile forward would be a better option. The continued presence of such figures highlights both improved player care and society's celebrity obsession.
