Patrick Vieira, the former Arsenal and France midfielder, has been appointed as the new head coach of Senegal's national football team, the Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) announced on Tuesday. Vieira succeeds Aliou Cissé, who was dismissed earlier this month after a disappointing Africa Cup of Nations campaign.
Vieira's Coaching Career
Vieira, 50, brings a wealth of coaching experience to the role, having previously managed New York City FC, Nice, and Crystal Palace. His most recent managerial position was at Strasbourg, where he left in July after a challenging season in Ligue 1.
The appointment marks a significant step for the 1998 World Cup winner, who will now lead a Senegal side that has been one of Africa's strongest teams in recent years. Senegal won the Africa Cup of Nations in 2021 under Cissé and reached the round of 16 at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
Contract and Expectations
The FSF confirmed that Vieira has signed a two-year contract, with an option for an additional year. His primary task will be to guide Senegal through the qualifying campaign for the 2026 World Cup, which is set to be held in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
"We are delighted to welcome Patrick Vieira as our new coach," said FSF president Augustin Senghor in a statement. "His experience at the highest level of European football and his understanding of the African game make him the ideal candidate to lead our national team."
Immediate Challenges
Vieira's first match in charge is expected to be a friendly against Morocco in September, followed by a crucial World Cup qualifier against the Democratic Republic of Congo in October. Senegal currently tops its qualifying group, with four wins from four matches.
The appointment has been met with enthusiasm among Senegalese fans, who hope Vieira can build on the foundations laid by Cissé. Cissé, who led Senegal to their first AFCON title in 2021, was relieved of his duties after the team's early exit from the 2023 AFCON in Ivory Coast.
Vieira's playing career included success at Arsenal, where he captained the 'Invincibles' to an unbeaten Premier League season in 2003-04. He also won the World Cup with France in 1998 and the European Championship in 2000.
As coach, Vieira will be supported by an experienced backroom staff, including assistant coach Tony Popovic and fitness coach Fabien Dubois, both of whom worked with him at Strasbourg.
Senegal's next competitive fixtures are in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, where they face DR Congo and South Sudan in November. Vieira will be expected to secure qualification and then lead the team to a strong performance at the finals.
