Nicholls Drop Proves Costly as Duckett Cashes In for England
Nicholls Drop Costs New Zealand as Duckett Shines for England

Duckett Makes New Zealand Pay After Early Reprieve

Ben Duckett scored a fluent 112 after being dropped on 16 by Henry Nicholls at second slip, as England reached 322-5 on the opening day of the second Test against New Zealand at Trent Bridge. The left-hander shared a 177-run partnership with Joe Root (89) to put England in a commanding position after they were put in to bat.

Nicholls' Drop Proves Costly

The pivotal moment came in the 17th over when Duckett edged a delivery from Matt Henry to second slip, where Nicholls put down a straightforward chance. At that stage, England were 44-1 after losing Zak Crawley early. Duckett made the most of the reprieve, adding 96 more runs before being dismissed by Tim Southee for 112 off 142 balls, including 15 fours and a six.

According to former England captain Michael Vaughan on BBC Test Match Special, "That drop was absolutely crucial. Duckett is a player who can punish you, and he did exactly that. Nicholls will be kicking himself because it changed the whole complexion of the day."

Root Steadies the Ship

Joe Root played a typically composed innings of 89 from 134 balls, hitting 11 fours. He and Duckett added 177 for the second wicket, the highest partnership of the day. Root looked set for a century but was dismissed by a sharp catch at gully off the bowling of Neil Wagner, falling 11 runs short of his 30th Test ton.

England were 221-2 at that stage, but two quick wickets—Root and then Ollie Pope (12)—left them at 244-4. However, Harry Brook (38 not out) and Ben Stokes (21 not out) steadied the innings with an unbroken 78-run stand for the fifth wicket.

New Zealand's Bowling Struggles

New Zealand's bowlers toiled on a flat pitch at Trent Bridge. Tim Southee was the pick of the attack with 2-58, while Neil Wagner took 2-72. Matt Henry went wicketless for 71 runs. The visitors had a tough day in the field, with the dropped catch summing up their frustrations.

New Zealand captain Kane Williamson said at the close of play, "It was a disappointing day for us. We didn't take our chances and England made us pay. Duckett played very well after being dropped. We need to come back strong tomorrow and try to restrict them to under 400."

England's Dominant Position

England's total of 322-5 leaves them in a strong position on a pitch that is expected to remain good for batting. With Brook and Stokes at the crease, they will look to push on to 400 on day two. The last five wickets added 78 runs, showing the depth in England's batting lineup.

The second Test is crucial for both sides, with the series level at 0-0 after the first Test was drawn. England will be aiming to take a 1-0 lead with two matches to play.
