MLS 2027 Sprint Season: Format, Playoffs, and Cup Qualifiers

MLS Sprint Season 2027: A Breakneck Start to Calendar Overhaul

Major League Soccer has officially revealed the structure for its highly anticipated 2027 "sprint season," a condensed competition set to launch in February as the league transitions to a fall-to-spring schedule. This unique season will feature 14 regular-season games per team, exclusively within conferences, followed by playoffs and significant cup qualification stakes.

Format and Schedule Details

The sprint season will commence in February 2027 and span just under three months, offering a rapid-fire departure from the league's traditional marathon-like regular season. All 30 MLS teams will participate in a fully in-conference slate, meaning Western Conference clubs will only face other Western teams, and Eastern Conference clubs will compete solely against Eastern opponents. Each team will play 14 games: seven at home and seven away, ensuring a balanced but intense schedule.

The top eight teams from each conference will advance to the playoffs, which will utilize a streamlined single-elimination bracket. The postseason is scheduled to conclude in May, with the only inter-conference matchup occurring if teams from different conferences reach the MLS Cup final. This format marks a temporary shift, as the league prepares for its full calendar switch.

Cup Qualification and Stakes

Beyond the playoffs, the sprint season carries substantial rewards for teams. Five berths into the 2028 Concacaf Champions Cup will be awarded based on sprint season results, adding high stakes to every match. Additionally, 18 teams—nine per conference—will qualify for the 2028 Leagues Cup based on their performance during this short season.

However, uncertainty remains regarding the US Open Cup, as US Soccer has not yet announced how MLS's calendar change will impact the tournament. Historically, the Open Cup has been contained within a single calendar year, with amateur qualifying in the preceding fall. In 2026, 16 MLS teams entered in the third round, but notable absences included defending champion Nashville SC and MLS Cup holder Inter Miami. The sprint season's effect on this competition is still to be determined.

Team Preparations and Future Outlook

Clubs are already adjusting their rosters in anticipation of the sprint season. For instance, DC United secured former US international goalkeeper Sean Johnson with a contract guaranteed through June 2027, while Nashville SC added players like Shak Mohammed and Isaiah LeFlore with team options covering both the sprint season and the subsequent 2027-28 campaign.

Following the sprint season, MLS will launch its first full fall-to-spring season in July 2027, concluding with MLS Cup in May 2028. The league plans to implement a winter break from mid-December to early February, aligning with international soccer calendars. This transition aims to enhance competitiveness and global integration, with the sprint season serving as a thrilling precursor to the new era.
