Man Utd Eye Karim Adeyemi as Dortmund Contract Talks Stall
Man Utd target Dortmund's Adeyemi amid contract issues

Manchester United are reportedly preparing to make a move for Borussia Dortmund's talented winger Karim Adeyemi, whose future in Germany appears increasingly uncertain.

Strained Relationship with Manager

The 23-year-old German international finds himself at a career crossroads amid growing tensions with Dortmund manager Nico Kovac. Their relationship has become noticeably strained in recent weeks, particularly after two high-profile incidents during matches.

During Dortmund's victory over Koln on October 25, Adeyemi was substituted and subsequently drew public criticism from his manager after throwing a water bottle at the bench. Kovac didn't hold back in his assessment, stating: "I think that's unnecessary. It's okay that he can be angry sometimes, but that's unnecessary, he's an adult."

The situation deteriorated further when Adeyemi was hauled off again during last weekend's draw with Hamburg, with Kovac visibly frustrated by the player's decision-making on the pitch.

Contract Complications Loom

While Adeyemi remains a regular starter for Dortmund, the timing couldn't be worse for contract negotiations. The forward's current deal runs until 2027, but talks have hit significant sticking points according to German publication Bild.

Adeyemi is pushing for a long-term commitment, while his newly-appointed agent Jorge Mendes is demanding a £70 million release clause be included in any new agreement. Dortmund officials are reportedly resistant to this demand, creating a potential impasse that could force the club to consider selling their asset.

Manchester United Connections

The Red Devils emerge as natural suitors given Mendes' involvement in recent big-money transfers to Old Trafford, including deals for Manuel Ugarte and Leny Yoro. United's interest appears genuine, with the club monitoring developments closely as the contract situation unfolds.

Adeyemi's statistics during his time at Dortmund show a player with considerable potential rather than finished product. Since joining from Red Bull Salzburg in 2022, he has scored 29 goals in 121 appearances for the German side, with his best Bundesliga return being seven goals in the 2024/25 season.

Known more for his rapid pace than prolific scoring, the German has also provided 13 assists in his 80 Bundesliga outings, demonstrating his creative capabilities alongside his direct attacking threat.

Manager's Assessment

Following Dortmund's 4-1 Champions League defeat to Manchester City earlier this month, Kovac offered a measured assessment of Adeyemi's development. "I want to keep it general: the passing quality that City showed compared to us was better," he said. "Karim had a few situations, but he didn't succeed. He lacked precision and accuracy."

The manager did acknowledge the player's potential, adding: "Karim is 23 years old, he has a lot of potential and needs to improve on some things. But that's what we are working on."

With Adeyemi's contract situation unresolved and his relationship with management under strain, next summer represents Dortmund's last major opportunity to cash in on their valuable asset before he enters the final year of his current deal.
