Manchester United have accelerated their pursuit of Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder Joao Gomes, with growing optimism a deal for the Brazilian could be sealed when the transfer window reopens next month.
Midfield Rebuild Becomes Priority
After focusing on their attack during the previous summer window, Manchester United have made strengthening their midfield their next key priority. While the club retains an interest in other targets, including Nottingham Forest's Elliot Anderson, Brighton's Carlos Baleba, and Crystal Palace's Adam Wharton, a move for any of that trio is considered unlikely in January.
This has led the Red Devils to pursue more viable short-term options to bolster their squad for the second half of the season, with Gomes emerging as the primary candidate.
Advanced Negotiations for £44m Deal
According to reports from Brazil, notably from Globo Esporte, talks between United and Wolves have now reached an advanced stage. The two clubs are currently negotiating a fee in the region of €50 million (£44 million).
There is said to be a positive feeling among all parties involved that an agreement can be reached before the end of the year, potentially allowing the transfer to be officially completed in January. This would mark the second significant deal between the two clubs this year, following United's summer acquisition of Matheus Cunha from Molineux.
Addressing a Pressing Need
The push to sign Gomes underscores the current shortage of options in United's midfield. Manager Amorim has largely relied on the experienced Casemiro, 33, and Bruno Fernandes this season. While Casemiro has performed well, his contract expires at the end of the campaign, highlighting the need for long-term planning.
Furthermore, the situation of Manuel Ugarte has become a concern. The £50 million signing from Paris Saint-Germain in 2024 has been confined to a substitute role and has failed to impress when given opportunities. Amorim recently admitted the Uruguayan is "struggling" to adapt to his new surroundings, despite their previous successful partnership at Sporting CP.
Joao Gomes, who joined Wolves for £15 million in January 2023, is now viewed as a potential solution to inject fresh energy and quality into United's engine room as they look to improve their fortunes.
