Liverpool have sacked manager Arne Slot after a disappointing campaign, with Andoni Iraola emerging as the leading candidate to replace him. The Dutchman leaves the club after just one season, despite having won the Premier League title the previous year. However, a dramatic fall from grace saw the defending champions finish fifth, a staggering 25 points behind champions Arsenal.
Slot's Departure Confirmed
The club confirmed the decision on Saturday, citing a need to evolve the team's style of play. A statement read: 'Liverpool FC can confirm Arne Slot is to depart his role as head coach with immediate effect and that the process to appoint a successor is under way. He leaves with a Premier League title to his name and our deepest gratitude and appreciation.'
Sources indicate the decision was made with 'enormous reluctance,' acknowledging that sacking a coach who delivered the club's second league title in 30 years feels unjust. However, the hierarchy believes a change is necessary to return to a more aggressive, front-foot style of football.
Fan and Player Discontent
Fans turned on Slot following a series of poor performances, with the team losing 19 matches this season. Dressing room disharmony also played a role, with Mohamed Salah being the most outspoken critic. In a recent social media post, Salah called for a return to the 'heavy metal football' played under Jurgen Klopp.
Liverpool insist the desire for a stylistic shift is not a criticism of Slot, whose calibre as one of Europe's leading coaches remains unquestioned.
Andoni Iraola Leads Odds
The search for a successor is already underway, and Andoni Iraola is the odds-on favourite at 4-6. The Spaniard left Bournemouth last week after his contract expired, having transformed the Cherries into one of the Premier League's most attractive sides. He secured European qualification for the first time in the club's history, finishing just one place and three points behind Liverpool.
Other contenders include Sebastian Hoeness (5-1), Julian Nagelsmann (7-1), Oliver Glasner (8-1), and even Jurgen Klopp (10-1). Luis Enrique, Steven Gerrard, and Unai Emery are also in the running.
Iraola's Next Move
Iraola had been linked with Crystal Palace and AC Milan, but those moves have reportedly fallen through. Speaking last weekend, he said: 'Now is the time to take decisions. I didn't want to focus on other things before the season ended. For me it was massive to get this team in Europe. Now I will have to take decisions and I suppose it will not take long. It is a matter of feeling, feeling the team, the players, the correct place, more than if it is a bigger club.'
With Liverpool's statement confirming the process to appoint a successor is underway, Iraola appears destined to take over one of the biggest jobs in English football.
