Michael Kayode sealed a dominant 3-0 victory for Brentford over Tottenham Hotspur in their Premier League opener, a result that exposed the visitors' ongoing defensive frailties despite a record-breaking summer of spending. Goals from Keane Lewis-Potter, Vitaly Janelt, and Kayode gave Brentford a comprehensive win, while Igor Thiago missed a penalty for the hosts.
Brentford's cohesive display outclasses Spurs' new signings
Brentford's blend of power, speed, and skill proved too much for a Tottenham side that showed no signs of improvement under new manager Roberto De Zerbi. The hosts, managed by Keith Andrews, pressed relentlessly and created numerous chances, with Thiago heading against the bar and Dango Ouattara twice going through on goal but failing to convert. Brentford could have won by a larger margin, but the three goals were enough to secure a joyous start to their campaign.
Mamadou Sangaré, who joined from Lens for £39m, was the standout performer on his debut. The Malian midfielder provided energy and quality in possession, and his clever one-two with Thiago set up Lewis-Potter's opening goal in the 12th minute. Sangaré pulled the ball back from the right for Lewis-Potter to run in from left-back and beat Antonin Kinsky from close range. Sangaré's performance was head and shoulders above any of De Zerbi's midfielders, despite Spurs' significant outlay.
Spurs' fragmented display raises concerns
Tottenham, who spent over £300m in the transfer window, including a club-record £100m on Sandro Tonali and £85m on Mateus Fernandes, looked fragmented and undercooked. They failed to perform the basics, were timid in possession, and chaotic at the back. De Zerbi admitted his side did not win a single second ball, a worrying statistic that highlighted their lack of fight. Spurs started with four debutants, including Andy Robertson at left-back and Jan Paul van Hecke partnering Marcos Senesi in central defence, but Brentford found wide open spaces from the start.
Brentford's second goal came after Lucas Bergvall lost a 50-50 challenge with Mathias Jensen, who shot, with Kinsky failing to push the ball to safety, leaving Janelt to convert the rebound. The third goal arrived from a corner, with Nathan Collins nodding down at the far post, Sangaré shooting, and Kayode ramming the loose ball into the roof of the net. Spurs' only notable chance came after they were 3-0 down in the second half.
De Zerbi's honest assessment and the road ahead
De Zerbi was honest in his assessment, admitting the performance was bereft of soul and emblematic of a team of individuals. He will hope that bringing in Omar Marmoush and Savinho from Manchester City will add more bite in attack, but disappointing displays from Richarlison, Mathys Tel, and Mikey Moore were not the only problem. Frailties existed in every department, and Bergvall and Conor Gallagher were removed at half-time.
Brentford, meanwhile, have enjoyed a calm window and are well drilled under Andrews, who said, "There's real trust in what we've built." The victory was a stark reminder that winning the transfer window is not the same as winning on the pitch, and Spurs now face a long road to regain their place in the top six.
