Rumours suggest Nintendo and Rockstar are collaborating on a Switch 2 port of Grand Theft Auto 6, but conflicting claims from insiders leave its release uncertain. While a PC version is expected eventually, given Rockstar's history with GTA 5 (19-month delay) and Red Dead Redemption 2 (13-month delay), a Switch 2 port faces significant technical challenges due to GTA 6's highly realistic graphics and massive open world.
Rumour sources and conflicting claims
Nash Weedle, a frequent leaker, has claimed since last year that a GTA 6 Switch 2 port is in development. Following the launch of GTA 6 pre-orders, he stated that 'technical hurdles have been overcome,' suggesting Rockstar has the game running on Nintendo's console, though it won't be ready this year. However, another insider, Shpeshal Nick, contradicts this, alleging he has heard of no such port. Instead, he claims Nintendo is working with Rockstar and publisher Take-Two Interactive to 'try and make it happen.'
Previous reports and industry context
In 2025, NateTheHate reported that Rockstar was testing GTA 6 on Switch 2 but could not confirm its status. A Switch 2 port would benefit both companies: GTA 6 is the most anticipated game ever, and a Switch 2 version would expand its audience beyond PlayStation 5 and Xbox, potentially boosting sales. Rockstar has shown interest in Nintendo platforms, having released Red Dead Redemption on Switch 1 and Switch 2, and Red Dead Redemption 2 has also been rumoured for Switch 2 and PS5, though unannounced.
Technical feasibility and market impact
The Switch 2 is more powerful than its predecessor, capable of running games like Cyberpunk 2077, but GTA 6's demanding graphics and scale make a port challenging. According to Nash Weedle, these issues have been resolved. If true, the port could significantly increase GTA 6's sales, which are already expected to be massive based on pre-order reports. Rockstar and Nintendo have a stronger working relationship than commonly perceived, further supporting the possibility of collaboration.
