Steven Gerrard Backs Liverpool's Decision to Sack Arne Slot, Suggests Ideal Replacement
Gerrard Backs Liverpool Sacking Slot, Names Ideal Replacement

Steven Gerrard has supported Liverpool's decision to part ways with Arne Slot, stating that the team appeared 'broken' during the latter stages of his tenure. Slot, who guided Liverpool to the Premier League title in his debut season after succeeding Jurgen Klopp, was dismissed following a disappointing campaign.

Slot's Mixed Legacy at Anfield

Slot's first season was a resounding success, as he led Liverpool to the Premier League crown. However, the club invested nearly £500 million last summer to strengthen the squad, but the heavy spending did not yield the desired results. Liverpool failed to defend their title, finishing fifth, a staggering 25 points behind champions Arsenal, and ended the season without any silverware.

Gerrard's Reaction to the Sacking

Speaking on TNT Sports, Gerrard expressed his surprise but ultimately backed the decision. 'I'm not surprised but I'm gutted for Arne Slot,' he said. 'He did an incredible job in his first year and will be remembered as a Premier League winner. He had big shoes to fill and did it seamlessly. However, in the last 10 games of last season and for most of this season, they haven't looked like Liverpool. They've been difficult to watch, disjointed, broken.'

Gerrard, widely regarded as one of Liverpool's greatest players, believes the club's hierarchy already has a shortlist of candidates. 'Liverpool don't work like that; they're an organised machine. I would be extremely surprised if they don't already know who they want. It's the right time for a new manager to come in, get pre-season, and recruit new players.'

Ideal Replacement: Andoni Iraola

Former Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola has emerged as the frontrunner to replace Slot. Gerrard endorsed this potential appointment, stating, 'I think that has potential. He's done a fabulous job at Bournemouth, and his style of play would suit Liverpool. But it's an attractive job for elite managers worldwide. He won't be the only name on the table, but Liverpool's links with Bournemouth mean they know him well. He should be in the conversation.'

Liverpool's search for a new head coach is reportedly underway, with the club aiming to appoint someone before pre-season begins.
