Fabian Ruiz scored a brace as Spain cruised past Austria 3-1 in the World Cup round of 32 on Tuesday, setting up a last-16 clash with Morocco. The Paris Saint-Germain midfielder opened the scoring in the 12th minute with a low drive from the edge of the box and added a second early in the second half with a curling effort.
Spain Dominate Early
Spain controlled possession from the outset, with Pedri and Gavi dictating the tempo in midfield. Austria struggled to create chances, managing only two shots on target in the first half. Spain's third goal came from Álvaro Morata in the 67th minute, heading in a cross from Dani Carvajal.
Austria's Late Consolation
Austria pulled one back in the 83rd minute through substitute Michael Gregoritsch, who tapped in from close range after a corner. However, Spain held firm to secure the win. Coach Luis de la Fuente praised his team's performance: "We played with intensity and quality. Fabian was outstanding, but the whole team stepped up."
Key Statistics
Spain had 68% possession and completed 85% of their passes, compared to Austria's 55% accuracy. Ruiz's two goals came from four attempts, while Morata's goal was his third of the tournament. Austria's only goal was their first in the knockout stage since 1954.
Next Challenge
Spain will face Morocco in the round of 16 on Saturday. Morocco advanced after a 2-1 win over Canada. De la Fuente said: "Morocco are a strong side, but we have confidence in our game." Spain have not won the World Cup since 2010 and are seeking a second title.
