Manchester United icon Patrice Evra has identified Brazilian forward Matheus Cunha as the standout most improved player at Old Trafford during the current campaign. The former defender made these remarks while participating in DHL Express's 'Delivering Dreams' initiative, highlighting Cunha's significant progress following a challenging start to his United career.
From Slow Start to Key Contributor
Matheus Cunha arrived at Manchester United last summer in a high-profile £62.5 million transfer from Wolverhampton Wanderers, with considerable expectations surrounding his immediate impact. However, the Brazilian international experienced a difficult adaptation period, requiring nine appearances before finally breaking his goalscoring drought for the Red Devils.
Since that initial breakthrough, Cunha has added six more goals to his tally, demonstrating growing confidence and integration within the squad. While his scoring return might not yet be described as prolific, his importance to the team has become increasingly evident. Cunha has secured his position as one of the first names on the team sheet and delivered one of the season's most memorable moments with a sensational last-minute winning goal against Arsenal in January.
Evra's Assessment of United's New Signings
Patrice Evra expressed particular satisfaction with Manchester United's summer recruitment, specifically mentioning both Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha as successful additions. "I am really happy with the new signings including Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha," Evra stated. "They bring something different to the team. Cunha has great vision and skill, and he's strong and fast playing up front. These signings are proving why they were brought to Manchester United."
The French legend acknowledged the unique pressures associated with representing Manchester United, adding, "It's not easy to play for this club, but they are doing very well." When pressed specifically about the most improved player this season, Evra responded, "That's a tough one because everyone is pushing hard this season, but I would probably say Matheus Cunha."
Carrick's Influence and Tactical Adjustments
Evra credited interim manager Michael Carrick with playing a crucial role in Cunha's development and the improvement of other players within the squad. This is particularly notable given that Cunha was originally signed under previous manager Ruben Amorim, whose tenure ended in January following a disappointing run of form and a significant falling out with United's hierarchy.
Another beneficiary of Carrick's tactical approach has been Patrick Dorgu, who arrived at Old Trafford eighteen months ago. The Denmark international initially struggled to adapt to Amorim's 3-4-3 system as a left wing-back but has experienced a resurgence in a more offensive role under Carrick's more conventional tactical blueprint.
"When you play as a left-back, people often judge your performance by your attacking play," Evra observed regarding Dorgu. "You have to find the right balance, but with the way modern football is played, I think Patrick Dorgu is more dangerous as a left winger. That goal he scored against Arsenal was unbelievable. He is definitely more attacking than defensive. While the manager will ultimately decide, I see his long-term future as a left winger."
Beyond the Pitch: Delivering Dreams Campaign
Evra made these comments while participating in DHL Express's 'Delivering Dreams' campaign, where the logistics company, as Manchester United's Official Logistics Partner, facilitated the delivery of a professional-grade, all-weather football pitch to Mae Suek, Thailand. This remote community, where over 85% of residents are lifelong Manchester United supporters, previously had limited access to proper football facilities.
The former defender led the inaugural training session on the new surface, describing the experience as profoundly meaningful. "When I saw the smiles on the kids' faces when they played on this beautiful football pitch for the first time was a moment I won't forget," Evra reflected. "When I was that age, I didn't have the opportunity or the luxury to play on that kind of pitch. It's an amazing campaign and an honour to be chosen to cut the cord and be the first one playing on the pitch with those kids."
Evra emphasized the broader importance of accessible football facilities, stating, "It is incredibly important that everyone has access to football facilities from an early age because this is where you build leadership and wider skills. I didn't go through an academy, so having a pitch like this where it is free to play and you can just enjoy yourself and keep out of trouble is hugely beneficial. This pitch will allow the community to improve their skills every day. I want more kids to play outside, have fun, and play the game."
As Manchester United continues its campaign under Michael Carrick's interim leadership, the development of players like Matheus Cunha and Patrick Dorgu provides encouraging signs for the future. Evra's endorsement highlights not only individual improvement but also the positive impact of tactical adjustments and patient development within the demanding environment of elite football.
