England's dramatic 3-2 victory over Mexico in the World Cup round of 16 attracted a peak live audience of 9.1 million on BBC One and BBC iPlayer, despite the match kicking off at 2am BST. The broadcaster confirmed this was the largest television audience ever recorded for a live UK broadcast between 2am and 4am.
Record-breaking digital engagement
The match drove the biggest day ever for BBC iPlayer, the BBC Sport website and app, and BBC Sport's social video views. On Monday, BBC iPlayer received 48 million requests for World Cup and other content, marking its highest single day on record. The BBC Sport website and app saw 15 million unique visitors, also a record.
BBC Sport's live text coverage was viewed over 18.6 million times globally, with 13.3 million views from the UK. The match also became the biggest single day for BBC Sport on social media, with more than 330 million video views across platforms. Notably, Harry Kane's post-match interview with Kelly Somers, where the England captain had lost his voice, garnered over 65 million views.
Audience surpasses previous overnight records
The 9.1 million peak audience was more than triple the previous overnight record set during the Rio 2016 Olympics, when over 3 million watched Mo Farah win gold in the 10,000m alongside Jessica Ennis-Hill and Greg Rutherford.
England's victory, with Jude Bellingham scoring twice and Harry Kane converting a penalty, also saw a record 5.9 million streams of highlights on BBC iPlayer, the BBC Sport website and app, and the BBC Football YouTube channel.
Catch-up viewing success
A full rerun of the match on BBC Two attracted a peak of 1.1 million viewers and an average of 900,000, as fans relived the dramatic win. BBC director of sport Alex Kay-Jelski said: "These are phenomenal figures and a brilliant reflection of what happens when the nation comes together behind England. Millions of fans sacrificed a night's sleep to witness an unforgettable World Cup victory, while millions more caught up as soon as they woke up. It was one of those truly special sporting moments that people simply couldn't afford to miss."
