England vs Mexico kick-off time confirmed despite storm fears

England’s World Cup knockout match against Mexico will kick off at the originally planned time, despite storm forecasts prompting discussions over bringing the game forward. FIFA held discussions on Friday (July 3) over bringing the game forward six hours as bad weather prompted fears of delays and safety concerns for those in attendance.

Discussions over kick-off time change

It was suggested that the Three Lions' encounter with the co-hosts would kick off at 12pm local time, 7pm UK time, rather than 1am in the UK, due to the threat of adverse weather and thunderstorms. The England team bus arrived in Mexico City overnight ahead of the game now confirmed to be starting in the early hours of Monday morning (1am, UK time). A firm decision was never made about switching the game time, but discussions were held between FIFA and the Mexican and English Football Associations.

Weather forecast and safety concerns

The official weather forecast for the game shows a 90 per cent risk of thunderstorms around kick-off time, which means it could still change as we get closer to the match. According to FIFA rules, any lightning within a six-mile radius of a stadium will lead to an immediate postponement for the safety of players and spectators. Mexico have already experienced interruptions to their preparations so far this tournament, with their last-32 tie against Ecuador delayed by an hour because of thunder and lightning in Mexico City.

Fan impact and travel plans

Scott Cole, 40, from Bristol, told the Press Association: “You’ve got to feel for those that have got flights coming over on Sunday morning. Obviously, any change in kick-off time… I’ve seen people flying at about half nine, half past 10 – you’re never going to make it to that stadium when you land there. If it is a 12pm kick-off and you’re landing at half past 10 – we came in at 8pm last night and it took us an hour to get out.” He added: “As for the players, there’s more humidity at 12pm, and you’ve got the people who’ve made plans to get here early, it could affect them.”

Altitude and other challenges

Fans are currently travelling to the stadium, and an earlier kick-off time could also affect whether they will make it in time. The weather conditions are another obstacle, as the England team is set to face Mexico at the Azteca Stadium, which is over 7,000 ft above sea level, and there is talk about how altitude will impact the players. Altitude can impact your breathing and heart rate, your sleep and increase your risk of dehydration. Pubs in the UK have been granted a special extension to stay open past 1am for England fans to watch the game.
