England Manager Thomas Tuchel Unveils Expanded 35-Man Squad for Wembley Friendlies
England manager Thomas Tuchel has announced a 35-man squad for the upcoming friendlies against Uruguay and Japan at Wembley Stadium, marking a strategic move to assess fringe players while resting key figures. The squad includes notable recalls for Harry Maguire and Kobbie Mainoo, both of whom have impressed with Manchester United this season. Tuchel explained that the enlarged selection allows him to split the group, giving opportunities to less experienced players in the first match and integrating established stars later.
Key Inclusions and Omissions in the England Setup
In addition to Maguire and Mainoo, Tuchel has brought back Lewis Hall, Fikayo Tomori, Dominic Calvert-Lewin, and Dominic Solanke, while handing a first call-up to James Garner. However, the squad sees eye-catching absences, with Trent Alexander-Arnold, Morgan Gibbs-White, and Ollie Watkins left out, raising concerns about their World Cup prospects. Tuchel emphasized that this squad is crucial for finalizing his 26-man group for the 2026 World Cup in the US, Canada, and Mexico.
Rest Strategy and Player Management Ahead of Critical Matches
Eleven players, including Dean Henderson, Declan Rice, and Harry Kane, will not report until after the Uruguay match on Friday, 27 March, to ensure they are rested at this busy stage of the season. Jude Bellingham is included but will be carefully monitored after a muscle injury; he is ruled out against Uruguay but may feature against Japan on Tuesday, 31 March. Tuchel stated, "We will not take any risks with Jude. The best case scenario is that he gets some minutes against Japan."
Tuchel's Vision for Squad Depth and World Cup Preparation
Tuchel highlighted that the squad division aims to open up competition for World Cup spots, saying, "We bring players in that we haven't seen to open up the picture for plane tickets to the US." While Arsenal's 16-year-old prodigy Max Dowman is not selected, Tuchel did not rule out a future call-up, noting his talent but emphasizing the need to avoid premature pressure. This announcement sets the stage for intense friendlies that will shape England's final World Cup roster.
