England secured a 2-0 victory over Panama to finish top of their World Cup group, but the performance was far from convincing. Goals from Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham were enough to see off a resilient Panama side that defended deep and frustrated the Three Lions for long periods.
England's Laboured Performance
The match, played at the Khalifa International Stadium, saw England dominate possession but struggle to break down a well-organized Panamanian defense. Kane opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 38th minute after a handball in the box. Bellingham doubled the lead just before halftime with a deflected shot from outside the area.
Despite the win, England manager Gareth Southgate acknowledged the team's struggles. "We knew it would be tough. Panama made it difficult for us, but we showed resilience to get the job done," Southgate said after the match.
England finished the group stage with seven points, one ahead of second-placed Iran, who beat Wales 2-0. Panama finished third with three points, while Wales finished bottom with one point.
DR Congo's Historic Win
In the other Group B match, DR Congo recorded their first-ever World Cup victory, beating Saudi Arabia 1-0. The winning goal came from striker Cédric Bakambu in the 67th minute, who pounced on a defensive error to slot home.
The victory sent DR Congo into the knockout stages for the first time in their history. "This is a dream come true for the entire nation. We have worked so hard for this moment," said DR Congo coach Héctor Cúper.
DR Congo finished second in the group with four points, behind England. Saudi Arabia finished bottom with one point.
Group Standings and Next Matches
England will face the runners-up of Group A in the round of 16, while DR Congo will take on the winners of Group A. The identity of their opponents will be determined after the final group matches on Saturday.
England's performance has raised questions about their ability to go deep in the tournament, but Southgate remained optimistic. "We are through to the knockout stages, and that's what matters. We will improve as the tournament goes on," he said.
