Elijah Upson, the 18-year-old son of former England international Matthew Upson, has left Tottenham Hotspur's academy to sign for arch-rivals Arsenal. The centre-back turned down a professional contract with Spurs in June after 11 years in their youth system, attracting interest from Chelsea, Manchester City, Everton, Borussia Dortmund, Bayern Munich, Bayer Leverkusen, and Monaco. According to Fabrizio Romano, Upson has signed a deal with Arsenal, with an official announcement expected shortly.
Compensation and Family Ties
As Upson is under 24, Tottenham will receive compensation from Arsenal. The move is reminiscent of Sol Campbell's controversial transfer between the two clubs. Reports indicate Upson made his decision after visiting Arsenal's London Colney training ground and consulting with his family, including his father Matthew Upson, who played for Arsenal from 2003 to 2007, winning the Premier League in 2002. Matthew Upson earned 21 England caps and scored in the 4-1 World Cup defeat to Germany in 2010.
First-Team Prospects
It remains uncertain whether Elijah can break into Mikel Arteta's first-team, especially as Arsenal seeks a new centre-back this summer. William Saliba is expected to miss the start of the season due to a back injury worsened at the World Cup. Arteta has been linked with England's Ezri Konsa, but Aston Villa's high valuation may be a hurdle. Arsenal has also been connected with former player Konstantinos Mavropanos and Chelsea target Maxence Lacroix.
