DeChambeau responds to Faldo's jibe with strong opening round
Bryson DeChambeau shot a three-under-par 67 in the first round of the 154th Open Championship at Royal Birkdale, placing him two strokes behind leader Jackson Suber. The American, who has missed the cut in the three previous majors of 2026, declined to speak to the media after his round but offered brief comments through tournament organisers.
Faldo's criticism and DeChambeau's subtle retort
Six-time major winner Nick Faldo had said before the tournament, “I’d say it to his face, DeChambeau has zero clue of strategy.” DeChambeau appeared to respond indirectly, stating: “I think you’ve got to be a lot more strategic out on the golf course. I feel like I did a really good job today of being incredibly strategic and focused super-hard on placing it in the right places.” Faldo later claimed from his television booth that he had “rattled the cage” of DeChambeau.
DeChambeau's equipment and LIV Golf future
DeChambeau has new irons in his bag and has switched his driver. He remains with LIV Golf, though there are reports that Saudi Arabian funding may be withdrawn and credible backers are looking at a scaled-down but functioning LIV from 2027.
Jackson Suber leads on debut
Jackson Suber, playing his first European event, shot a superb inward half of 31 to take the lead at five under par. The American said, “The golf is really cool. And the towns, how the train system works.” He was unaware of potential railway strikes over the weekend.
Other contenders and notable scores
Tyrrell Hatton, playing alongside DeChambeau, carded a 69 and said of DeChambeau: “It shouldn’t surprise anyone. He’s an amazing player.” Rory McIlroy finished at two over par after struggles with the putter but remains in contention. Scottie Scheffler is at two under, Henrik Stenson and Collin Morikawa share that score, and Shane Lowry shot 69. Justin Rose faces a battle to make the cut after a 75.
