Chelsea's Cucurella Injury Doubt for Man City Clash After Training Return
Cucurella injury doubt for Chelsea vs Man City

Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella faces a race against time to be fit for this weekend's crucial Premier League fixture away at Manchester City.

Cucurella's Fitness Battle

The Spanish left-back, who is 27 years old, missed Chelsea's 2-2 draw with Bournemouth on Tuesday. Malo Gusto was required to deputise in his absence. Former head coach Enzo Maresca, who left the club on New Year's Day, initially described the problem as a 'small issue' and expressed hope for Cucurella's return at the Etihad Stadium.

While the player did participate in training sessions on Friday, his availability for the Sunday match remains uncertain. Caretaker manager Calum McFarlane addressed the media in the pre-match press conference, stating that a final assessment is still pending.

McFarlane's Cautious Update

'With Marc it is positive and we will see with him,' McFarlane revealed. 'We're undecided on that [whether he will play], I don't have the full information on him as of yet.'

He confirmed there were no further injury updates concerning other members of the squad at this moment. McFarlane also shifted focus to his immediate task, emphasising that his sole priority is preparing the team for the formidable challenge posed by Pep Guardiola's Manchester City.

Caretaker Boss Focused on City Challenge

Discussing his temporary role, McFarlane said he has received strong backing from the club's hierarchy. 'I have spoken with the owners and directors and they have been really supportive,' he stated. 'They have given us everything we need to be successful.'

He made it clear that his vision does not extend beyond the upcoming fixture. 'The brief is to prepare the lads for Manchester City on Sunday and that's all I see at this time,' McFarlane added. 'Our role is giving the players the support they need to go out and execute.'

The potential absence of Cucurella would be a significant blow for Chelsea as they aim to secure a positive result against the reigning champions. All eyes will now be on the final fitness tests ahead of Sunday's showdown.
