Coronation Street star James Cartwright has dropped a major hint about the identity of Theo Silverton's killer, suggesting viewers will be surprised by the outcome. The actor, who played the villainous Theo, spoke at the BAFTA Television Awards 2026, keeping fans guessing about the murder mystery.
The Murder of Theo Silverton
Theo Silverton, portrayed by James Cartwright, was a cruel and sadistic abuser who systematically attempted to destroy Todd Grimshaw (Gareth Pierce). After his true nature was exposed, Theo made no effort to hide his monstrous behavior. His death, caused by a blow to the head, has left Weatherfield in shock. Now, detectives Lisa Connor-Swain (Vicky Myers) and Kit Green (Jacob Roberts) are investigating the murder, with a list of suspects that includes Theo's ex-wife Danielle Silverton (Natalie Anderson), Todd's father figure George Shuttleworth (Tony Maudsley), his girlfriend Christina Boyd (Amy Robbins), former best friend Gary Windass (Mikey North), Summer Spellman (Harriet Bibby), and Todd himself.
James Cartwright's Tease
At the BAFTA Television Awards, Cartwright teased the Radio Times: 'If I told you, I'd have to kill you. Is that a price you're willing to pay?' He added, 'It's been a really exciting time to be part of the show and listen – it's not who you think it is.' Cartwright suggested that while Summer could be a suspect, 'Unlikely, but she could have hit him with a can of beans.' He also mentioned George and even Pauline McGlynn, emphasizing, 'There's so many people that it could be!'
Cartwright expressed his excitement about the murder week storyline: 'My gosh, it was so exciting, and I feel so honoured and blessed to have been at the show at the time.' He noted that the storyline offered two mysteries: who would die and who committed the murder.
Summer in the Frame
Next week, George and Christina discover Summer's journal, which contains pages detailing her fury and hatred for Theo, including a description of holding a gun to his head. This leads them to believe Summer could be the killer. Harriet Bibby, who plays Summer, said: 'With the discovery of this private journal, I think she is panicked because she knows it looks really bad. Whether she's guilty or innocent, this journal is not a good thing for anybody else to see.'
Kit later makes a huge discovery, and Summer is brought in for interrogation by Lisa. Bibby added: 'I think she's panicking, there has never been a situation like this that Summer has even been close to. She's also thinking about Billy, what would he think of me now, and that makes her panic even more.'
What's Next?
As the investigation deepens, fans are left wondering who really killed Theo. With Cartwright's hint that the killer is not who viewers expect, the upcoming episodes promise more twists and turns. Stay tuned to Coronation Street for the latest developments.
