Colombia secure top spot in Group K with goalless draw
Colombia finished top of World Cup Group K after a 0-0 draw with Portugal in a hugely entertaining match. Cristiano Ronaldo, who had earlier roared "I'm back!" after scoring against Uzbekistan, was kept quiet by Colombia's defence. The 41-year-old toiled without success, and Portugal struggled to create clear chances.
Disallowed goal denies Colombia victory
Colombia believed they had won the match in stoppage time when Davinson Sánchez headed home, but the goal was ruled out for offside. "We let Colombia have the match they wanted," said Portugal coach Roberto Martínez. "We did not control possession as much as we wanted. We weren't able to control the game or use our talent."
First half: early chances for both sides
The game sparked into life within a minute when Luis Díaz's cross deflected onto the head of Jhon Córdoba, who headed over. Diogo Costa then made an excellent one-handed save from Córdoba. Portugal's best chance came from Bruno Fernandes, whose shot was saved by Camilo Vargas. Ronaldo's overhead kick from the rebound was blocked.
Second half: Colombia dominate
Colombia continued to press after the break. Richard Ríos fired wide from close range, and Costa saved smartly from Jhon Arias. Luis Suárez miskicked after creating space, and James Rodríguez's shot was desperately cleared by Renato Veiga. Portugal introduced Rafael Leão from the bench but failed to find a breakthrough. Diogo Dalot curled wide from a corner.
Ronaldo's struggle continues
Ronaldo, who has now failed to score in two of Portugal's three group games, was peripheral throughout. "Nobody other than Father Time has chased down Ronaldo," the report noted, comparing his situation to the film Trainspotting. "He once was in the same discussion as Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappé and Erling Haaland. Now? It is a tricky point to enforce."
Colombian fans create home atmosphere
Colombian supporters accounted for an estimated 90% of the stadium, creating a vibrant atmosphere. The match was played in Miami, days after Brazilian fans dominated the same venue. Colombia's fans were orderly and noisy, making the team feel like a host nation.
What's next for both teams
Portugal will face Croatia in the last 32, while Colombia take on Ghana. Martínez admitted his team needs to improve: "We did not control possession as much as we wanted. We weren’t able to control the game or use our talent."
